AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

DIT Kalamazoo loves you and wishes you a safe, responsible, polite, PC New Year.

However, NO FUN HOUSE WANTS YOU TO PARTY LIKE IT’S 2009!!!

None other than GROW FANGS!, ROTTEN WOOD MOON & PROBLEMS THAT FIX THEMSELVES will be kicking it old school and rocking the night away like only they can!!!

Plus, we’ve just received word that all the neighbors will be out of town tonight! Meaning: NO COPS NO PARENTS NO WORRIES

Word on the street is, there may even be a little secret fun going on upstairs in honor of Emilie Tole’s birth…

1/1 – Ackley Kid, Front of Resistance, Coma Nova, Inflatable Best Friend @ the Ant Hill

In case you never got the memo, on New Years day (that is the Saturday after Xmas), there’s going to be a hootenany over at the Ant Hill. “What is this hootenany you’re talking about?” you may ask. Well it’s none other than Ackley Kid, Coma Nova, Inflatable Best Friend and Front of Resistance!

Come and check out the music, support the local music scene, because without you it’s just a bunch of dudes playing for other dudes who are playing for them, and that sounds a little dirty, and no one likes that.

12/30 – Saxsquatch All-Stars Party @ the Strutt!

This here’s the Saxsquatch in case you didn’t know. He plays the saxophone like a drowning man who can see the shore, just like Captain Beefheart would have liked it (God rest his soul).

Saxsquatch can be spotted cranking out the jazz with his main bandfellows, Bridge Band, and blows all over many Kalamazoo acts, including the Dynamics, Max Dandyslax, Graham Parsons and the Go Rounds, Duke & the Loose Cannons and many more. On December 30, he’s bringing all of the wildest players he can find out to the Strutt for an All-Star Revue of Epic Proportions.

NO COVER! DRINK SPECIALS! WILD TIMES! BE THERE!

12/27 – Peggy Wray, Birdfingers, Gitis Baggs @ the Strutt

Mr. Gitis Baggs is a conspicous face in the local music scene. You can catch him blowin’ up with the Go Rounds or shaking maraccas with Tiny Rhythm, but what many folks don’t know is that Baggs is an accomplished recording artist and songwriter hisself. Its like the Beatles and the Byrds and Bryan Wilson all together. You’ll like it.

Joining Gitis at the Strutt tonight will be haunted folksinger Peggy Wray and mysterious space warrior Birdfingers. Door is $3, show starts at 9.

12/22 – Tiny Rhythm, Robin Parrent (Violent Ear) @ the Strutt

If I owned a circus hall of mirrors, I’d pipe Robin Parrent through the loudspeaker. Why? He’s got that perfectly spooked-out soul sound that can be fun and unsettling at the same time.

Jungle-Kraut-Rock dance party starters Tiny Rhythm are gonna keep it loud and wild. These guys got the place rattling yesterday at open mic night. Don’t miss em.

Soft Music, Sharp Tongues at the House of Love

Tonight, three excellent acoustic acts take the ‘stage’ at the House of Love. On a bit of a road-trip, Chris Darby is coming in from Chicago to strum his guitar and sing his tunes about life on the road.

Tim Tapper will also be bring his new project – the Useless Worries – to light tonight in it’s first official live performance. No telling what is in store exactly, but tell has been heard of protest aplenty.

Finally, The Almanac Shouters will be bringing their own brand of foot-stompin’, song-shoutin’ punk-influenced folk tunes. High-energy is the order of the day with these guys, and they always promise to put on a good show.

The House of Love is in a secret spot, but if you email ditkalamazoo@gmail.com, we’ll let you in on it. See you guys there!

12/17 – TV Ghost, People’s Temple, Forget the Times @ Louie’s

Indiana’s TV Ghost are the kind of noisy rock n roll band that you want to listen to while drag-racing a stolen car. They’ll be freaking out at Louie’s Trophy house tonight with criminally cool rock outfit People’s Temple and local guitar experiment Forget the Times.

Tickets are $8 at the door. Show starts at 10 pm, 18+.

Jazz at Louie’s with Saxsquatch and Bridge Band

As the school semester draws to a close and we enter the heart of the holiday season, what could be better way to unwind than a night of great jazz?  Saxsquatch and Bridge Band will be performing tonight (12/16) at Louie’s Trophy Bar, bringing a modern vibe to classic jazz tunes.

I had the pleasure of seeing this group last time they played Louie’s under the name ‘The William Wenger Trio.’  I truly enjoyed their blend of be-bop and cool jazz, which satisfies the taste of jazz appreciators and yet remains palatable for all music fans.

The band last time (and I’ve been lead to believe it will be the same tonight) featured Mr. Jarad Saxsquatch Selner on the Alto and Tenor Saxophones.  The rythm section consisted of James Duke (Son Drop) on the drums, Jakab Selner on the electric bass, and Tommy Aldred on the Fender Rhodes.  These talented fella’s get to show off a different side of DIT(K) that is bound to put a swing in your stride and a smile on your face.

The show starts at 9 and will go until midnight.  The bar area has no cover and the back room with the tunes is only $2.  Information for Louie’s is listed in our  “Where you at?” section.  This is definitely a show to check out if you need a breath of fresh air.

12/15 – Folkish Folkies at the Strutt

Wednesday night is a night of back-woods splendor at The Strutt, when Red Tail Ring returns to play what is sure to be an excellent show. Haunting acoustic music punctuated by lilting vocal melodies is the order that Red Tail Ring serves, and in excellent form.

Joining them will be Putnam Smith. Fella gets down on that banjo, just a pickin’ and a grinnin’. It’s going to be nothing short of a good time.
