12/13 – Duke & the Loose Cannons @ The Strutt! FREE SHOW!

Craig, Nameless Hippie, and Duke circa 70's

This Monday night, the Strutt welcomes the funky freak jazz of Duke & the Loose Cannons. Think early Zappa meets Sly Stone meets Coltrane meets… you get the picture. The band features some wild players, including members of Wooden Nickel and Kalamazoo legends the Sherman Shultz Food Band, as well as local musical monster Saxsquatch. They don’t call them the Loose Cannons for nothing; get ready to get silly.

No cover for this one. Free live music from 8-11!

12/10 – Shores, Jen Gloeckner, Fiona Dickinson @ Fletcher Collective

This friday, Fletcher Collective hosts No Idea Record’s Shores. This is slowcore at it’s best: thick, clear, warm and cleansing. Fiona Dickinson and Jen Gloeckner will bring the haunt and fire.

For directions to the Fletcher Collective, click here. Show starts at 9 sharp.

With the Weather Outside Being Frightful…

The show tonight at the Strutt was quite delightful. Good people, good music, good times.

Strutt newcomers, The Post Addition, put on a solid performance sounding like reverberating echoes of a post hardcore band with a more mellow twist. Would definitely like to see these guys again.

Northern Indiana’s Analecta, and hometown kids Her Majesty’s Ship, Victory! heightened the mood of the weather with a dose of powerful post rock. Both of these bands get better and better with each performance, I swear. It’s a constant treat to see how much each band progresses with every new song.

Finally, Native put on a spectacular performance, as per usual.

12/5 – Native, Analecta, HMS Victory!, Post Addition @ the Strutt

Tonight is a good night for fans of emo and post-rock. Some of the midwest’s finest will bring their sound to the main stage at the Strutt tonight, including Native, Analecta, H.M.S. Victory!, and the Post Addition. Admission is $5 and the show starts at 8 pm.

Frontier Ruckus this Saturday 12/4 @ the Strutt!

With clear, fascinating lyrics and stunning harmonies, Frontier Ruckus is a folk-rock band that everyone in Michigan can be proud of. They should be playing on every late-night tv show and on the radio of every rusting 1980’s pickup truck. They should be snaking up through your little white earbuds as you walk through slush towards class.

white pines the fall

Also performing at the Strutt on saturday night will be Ohio’s equally stunning folk act White Pines, and all residents of Ohio should be as proud. Joseph Scott has a glowing ember for a voice. For real.

Local bumpkins Son Drop will play a lil’ rock and roll to get the night started. Tickets are $8 at the door.

Asylum Lake Zine Release Tonight!!!

Hey lovers of lit. The newest and freshest local zine is dropping tonight at the Strutt, and there are some killer bands that will kick it off in style. Did we mention it’s free? It’s free. You should go.

Sitting In: A Son Drop Practice

A couple bare bulbs and the pale yellow foam pads on the walls set the perfect ambiance for a folk rock practice in late November. This old student ghetto basement is just a few degrees from bracing but the Son Drop boys don’t seem hindered in the least by the cold.

The ensemble consists of front man and rhythm guitarist James duke, lead guitarist Jarab Selner, bassist Jeremy Ruggles, and drummer Jarad ‘Saxquatch’ Selner (who normally serves as the bands’ saxophonist but is sitting in for Dan Flack). Son Drop uses a simple but driving approach to performing music. The parts laid down by the rhythm section lend plenty of momentum to get folks dancing, with harmonic movements and melodic lines so pretty they could force the most staunch of nihilists to fall in love.

Dukes’ voice sounds unlike that of any other singer I’ve heard, his timbre and way of approaching notes cause the the ossicles of the ears to vibrate in a most pleasant way, which is tastefully augmented by Jarab’s tactful guitar leads. The recently married Duke is a very playful song writer, singing of love and fun, often including little quips in his tunes, while maintaining the ability to discuss such austere topics as death, and his uncertainty about a future career.

As I listen, I cannot help but be impressed by how tight these guys are. Even in practice Son Drop puts on the type of locked-in performance we all love to hear. Ruggles’ rock solid bass lines work in junction with Saxquatch’s pocket to produce all the enthralling dynamic range and tension release James and Jarab need to build their rich, melodic leads. Hearing and viewing Son drop is a fun experience, these guys really know how to make music that is as entertaining and thoughtful as it is unique.

Based on this practice I can safely say that Saturday’s show at the Strutt with Frontier Ruckus and White Pine should be a great one, and I, personally, won’t be missing it for anything.
