3/10 – Folky Folkies take over Louie’s

This Thursday night, Louie’s is playing host to an evening of strings, voices and beautiful music as some of Kalamazoo’s best songwriters take the stage to support a most excellent group out of Chicago, called Good Evening (Not to be confused with Kalamazoo’s Good News, who played Louie’s earlier this week). These guys are a five-piece acoustic band with a varied instrumentation and a fantastic sound that reminds one of  a spring evening. Smooth but somewhat bittersweet, Good Evening is reason enough to be at  Louie’s Thursday.

Kalamazoo / Traverse City floating denizen Pat Carrol (Also – and perhaps  better known – as Cat Peril) is performing a set as well, singing songs and telling stories with his acoustic guitar. If you’ve never heard Pat play in Kalamazoo, be sure you take this opportunity to catch him in the act. You will not be disappointed.

Fiona Dickenson, another Kalamazoo favorite, will no doubt be performing music off of her album Deunde, which dropped earlier this year and is a fantastic listen (PieEaterMann did a wonderful review of it).  Beautiful, haunting and terrifying are three words that come to mind when listening to Fiona’s music, and her live performance is always top notch.

Finally, The Neu Spreitz’ Tyler Bassett is performing his own solo material under the moniker Silphium Blooms. It should be a blast for everyone involed, so hopefully we see everyone down at Louie’s tomorrow! I’ll be there for sure.

GET THE SHRED OUT

As I’m sure most of you already know, The Strutt has quite the show lined up tonight. MARNIE STERN, TERA MELOS and SECRET TWINS

This is absolutely not a show to be missed. But don’t take out word for it, check out what the Kalamazoo Gazzette has to say.

Also, here’s a few videos to wet your apatite:

Because Louie’s Trophy House and Grill is hosting Connecticut duo The Book Slave and solo artist One Hundred Year Ocean (Derrick from ‘The World Is A Beautiful Place And I Am No Longer Afraid To Die). Go on and check out their tunes. They’re a couple of guys who like to get a bit experimental, get quite a bit emotional, and mostly eschew drum kits altogether.

Stacking the bill tonight in support of the touring act will be locals Forget the Times, Totally Rad, and Good News. 8:30 is the scheduled start time, it’s three dollars, drinks are pretty cheap if you’re into that, and there’s an excellent chance most of your friends will already be there.

Louie’s is at 440 E. North st. and if you haven’t been yet, now’s a great time to check out a spot where a lot of DIY shows in Kalamazoo happen nowadays.

Anthill Gets Nasty, This Saturday

Aside from night two of the post-rock fest this Saturday, The Anthill will be hosting some sick basement action. The Reptilian will be visiting the house for the first time to play with close personal friends, The New Yorker, from the Northwestern parts of Indiana. Also on board are locals White Lightning, a newer addition to the Kalamazoo circuit who play a punked up version of sludgy thrash.

This is going to be a classic night of Kalamazoo basement raucousness. If you’re not planning on being at the Strutt already, come out and get buck. Bring some donation money to help the New Yorker get on their way-have you seen how high gas prices are these days?!

MIDWEST POST ROCK FEST

The newly formed Midwest Post Rock Collective wants to bring you only the finest in posty entertainment. A group of nice folks looking to set up some shows in order to help promote and unify all things post rock. And they’re hitting the ground running!

Flier by Calvin Maloney

This is the first show the collective is putting on. Not too shabby! And sooo reasonably priced!!

Music speaks louder than words and all the info you need is on the flier. So, here’s a bunch of fine examples of why you NEED to be at The Strutt this weekend. See you there!
