If you live in Kalamazoo or the surrounding areas, I’m sure you’ve heard all about this year’s Boiling Pot Oktoberfest. So many great bands spread over three days + food, drinks, art, community events and fun! Featuring the likes of:
Small Brown Bike
Murder By Death
Beast In The Field
The Reptilian
Legendary Shack Shakers
Flatfoot 56
PAN
Ackley Kid
Forget The Times
Mustard Plug
Son Drop
Kansas Bible Company
Frontier Ruckus
Minutes
Aaron Young & His Nightjars
The Philly Crawlers

Charles The Osprey
Glowfriends…

What you may not have heard about are some of the great after parties going on at night. Specifically the first ever show at THAT’S HOUSE tonight.

The fine folks in local post hardcore group That’s Blood have got a new house down in the ‘student ghetto’ and are looking to become a more active part in our growing community. They have graciously offered up their spot to help out some rad touring bands from Chicago tonight.

GYPSYBLOOD
These dudes have soul.

NEW DIET
Lo-Fi indie punk. Reminds one of early Pavement.

In addition,  That’s Blood themselves will be playing along with locals Everyone & Their Empty Cups. I had the pleasure of being in studio a week ago when ETEC was recording their Dead @ WIDR session. Those boys are getting really really good. Don’t miss it!

This show is gonna run a bit late so you can get as much Boiling Pot in as possible. First band kicks off at 10:30.
PLEASE PLEASE BRING DONATIONS FOR THE TOURING BANDS
These boys have a long way to travel and the ONLY way they’re gonna make it is if we help them.  If you’ve got beers, you’ve got bucks.

Lovestranger MD, WEARWOLF, Problems that Fix Themselves, and Joshualien

Saturday, October 1st at 11:30 pm there will be an electronica show at the Millhouse including such talents as Lovestranger MD, WEARWOLF, Problems that Fix Themselves, and joshualien.

If you’ve been missing a specific element in your life. Maybe it’s love, maybe it’s passion, maybe it’s just sheer happiness; i’m sure if you stopped by the Millhouse we could replace that gaping hole with synth. Stop by after Boiling Pot and get yourself an earful.

Upcoming: Michigan Music Documentary

CHUNK Media‘s Lisa Bridenstine is in the process of creating a sequel to her 2010 Michigan music documentary Weekend Warriors. So far, the product looks awesome! Here’s a sneak peak:

Full product is estimated to be out in November!

9/10 – ALREADY DEAD FAMILY REUNION

The sun, the earth, the moon, the planets, and all of our schedules aligned in a coincidence no less than a miracle! On this glorious glorious day, we present to you the Already Dead Tapes & Records Family Reunion; all of the Midwest’s finest purveyors of experimental music in one venue. Here we have the performance slot time, the artist, their hometown, and a short description. Branch out, hear something new, then come see it live!

A psychedelic traveler and dabbler of all musical genres, including noise, jam, world, reggae.

3:30 – 4:00: Hordes – Lansing, MI
Loud, doomy, hard-hitting gothic drone.

4:15 – 4:45: Peter Damien Juan Diego Cook – Kzoo
He might whip it out.

All your favourite bands of the 90’s. New wave of american grunge. Possibly their last ever Kalamazoo show.

10:00 – 10:30: Forget The Times – Kzoo
These guys suck. It’s not even music. What is this, I don’t even?

10:45 – 11:15: Solar Fox – Chicago, IL
Paisley psychedelic featuring Plastic Crimewave.

11:30 – 12: The Reptilian – Kzoo
Tappy screamy post hardcore Minus The Bear cover band. Could use another guitar player… better as a four-piece.

With all this eclectic awesomeness, it’ll be more than worth the $5 door charge. Music starts at 2 P.M. SHARP, and we’ll keep on jamming until midnight. First 50 people through the door get a limited edition Reunion cassette. Git sum.

Daniel Francis Doyle and more at the Strutt TOMORROW NIGHT

This upcoming event is a show I’ve been hyping up since I first heard about it. After seeing Daniel Francis Doyle play several months back the last time he stopped at the Strutt, I was completely floored. He is a one man band, utilizing loop petals and multi-instrumentalist talent to it’s full potential. That being said, though his show is a wonderful spectacle, his music is strange and captivating enough without the one man band aspect, I would recommend his work no matter how the stage presence is.

This time the show is also stacked with some of Kalamazoo’s finest. Starting off with a staple to this local music scene, Tim Tapper. He is an impressive songwriter, ever changing and improving his style.

Also on the bill is a new up and coming group, Witch Fingers, who feature members from the Reptilian, Ackley Kid and Forget the Times. For any fans of mathy yelly hardcore, this will be a group to look out for. Though this will be only their second show, these are well-seasoned musicians who will likely impress you.

And finally the Kalamazoo Duo Good News will also be performing their brand of highly technical aggressive math rock. These two have technical skill that is tough to match, that any musician in the room would be hard pressed not to watch.

The doors for this show are at 8pm and show begins at 9. The cost of entry is $5.
