6/2 Swands of Zapan, Forget The Times, Coma Nova, Edgar Cayce @ Victory House

Victory House has one of the most diverse show spaces in town, and this show continues to bolster that reputation.

Swands of Zapan are a long-time running noise psych-punk group based out of Saginaw. Their music is comparable to Chrome or Old Time Relijun, intense, strange, and hard hitting.

This show will also feature FORGET THE TIMES, hometown saviors of soul, COMA NOVA, your neighborhood grunge rock revival, and EDGAR CAYCE, who I can find literally no information on, so you may as well just go see for yourself.

6/2 — Astro Bats, Bat Cave, Sista Mista @ Louie’s

So this will be the second time I’ve written about Bat Cave without having seen them. I’m still really psyched to actually getting around to going to one of their shows, though. To reiterate: Batcave is Kzoo’s own: Matt Maverick, Andrew Mansberger, Isaac Lowery, and Matt Wood from such bands/acts as The Megaphones, Frank Fuzz, Tiny Rhythm, Philly Crawlers, respectively. Apparently they play some strange dance-y tunes. Based on their former bands alone, they are not an act to miss.

Astro Bats, from Grand Rapids, tag themselves as “psych”, “jazz and improv”, and “experimental”.

And lastly, Sista Mista.

Doors are at 8, show at 9. Ages 18+ $5. S’ya there.

SHITLIST/PARASITIC TWINS/SEX BUNKER/BROWN COW

June 1 at Slaughter House, Ft. Wayne and Chicago are coming to destroy.

From Ft. Wayne:

Shitlist is loud, sludgy, fast and everything punk in between. They even have some hip hop on the album, although I don’t if it happens live…

Parasitic Twins is an 80s style punk band in the vein of Black Flag. Not a reinvention of the wheel by any means but definitely worth checking out.

From Chicago:

Sex Bunker. Sludgy garage punk with a noise and psych aspect. Fits right in with the Slaughter House crowd and other heavy bands for the night.
(Have fun watching this one, sound quality is great though!)

The local for the night is Brown Cow. Out of place on this show but gooood stuff. Chilled folk rock to take you away.

This starts AT 9!!! You got booze, you got bux for the bandzzzzzz. I personally will be out of town this night and am bummed I’m missing it, please go rock yo’ faces off for me!!

R.I.P. Doc Watson and Earl Scruggs

The bluegrass guitar master Arthel “Doc” Watson died yesterday at the age of 89.  His death comes almost exactly two months after the passing of the great banjo player Earl Scruggs (88).

Both Scruggs and Watson are known for their invaluable contributions to both bluegrass music and their respective instruments.  Here’s the two of them playing a few tunes together back in the day (it takes a second to get to the music, but it’s worth it):

Though the death of an artist is always accompanied with sadness, the departure of these gentlemen comes after long lives of fantastic music.  Thus, I felt compelled to write this not out of mourning, but as a celebration of two of the greatest figures in American roots music.

Thank you, Doc and Earl.  Rest in peace.

Album Review: UUNO’s “This Is You At Your Best”

First some context. This Is You At Your Best is a personal project by Christopher Wahamaki, who is the literary brainchild behind the album. Writing all the vocals and music for the album’s nine songs (aside from the music of “Focal Point,” which was written by Sophia Boudeliou) over over the course of 19 credit hours (he was still in school while creating it), Wahamaki believed he ended up with a psychedelic-folk album with his recording buddy David Bolema, who managed all the mixing, recording, and background instruments.
While a few acoustic tropes are thrown in for good measure– distant harmonica playing, sparse violin, and backing female vocals done by local brooding-femme artisan Fiona Dickinson, the album feels more like an alternative rock performance than an out-there psychedelic-folk concoction. The opening song “Homeward,” seems to have more in common with Joe Jackson’s Big World– an echoing, live, stadium performance where the audience was asked to hold the applause in between songs, then The Jefferson Airplane or The Grateful Dead.

This Is You At Your Best

Rather than focusing on psychedelic, stripped-down acoustic meddling or watery distorted grooves, listeners are introduced to an album that features amped-up, arena-style acoustic ditties.  Wahamaki’s songs feel more at place during drunken strolls through rain-slicked city streets dotted with neon signs than a fire-pit where everyone is tripping on mushshrooms. That being said the album is pay-what-you-want on bandcamp and thus cheaper than both of those activities, so I recommend dropping a buck for a solid, local, rock-album.

5/28 – Peter Cook, Dickinson & Hartman, C.J. Boyd @ No Fun House 7pm

Guess who?!
None other than C.J. Boyd is touring through and No Fun House is getting down to throw another quiet storm!

Performances by…

Peter Cook (Local Acoustic)
-You might have seen him shredding on his green Strat., as the front man of psychedelic pop band The Philly Crawlers a while back, or as a part of Forget the Times. Either way, you’ve seen him, and you’ll know when you do once more.

Dickinson (emotional & melodic folk) & Hartman (ambient folk. Also reference Forget The Times)
-After speculating for quite some time now, Fiona Dickinson and Sean Hartman finally decided to come together and collaborate musically to create a final product bound to be amazing! The combination of Dickinson and Hartman alone will definitely be something you won’t want to miss.

The Almanac Shouters / Lincoln County War / George Costanza @ The Ant Hill 5.25

This Friday, a show that needs no introduction.

Local living room legends The Almanac Shouters are calling off their hiatus for one night only. Nola, a founding member of the group, plans to move from town at the end of this month. The Shouters haven’t said it will be their final reunion show, but it very well could be. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of catching their incredible, energetic live show in the past, treat yourself and make it out to this show.

George Costanza, who will be kicking off their first tour at this show, was just a featured artist in a recent DITKalamazoo post, therefore needs no further description, but here’s a video (thanks to neobeatglory for the footage).

Lincoln County War will also be folking up the night with great stories and belted vocals. Here’s some footage of them performing at Victory House, courtesy of alexgilbert247.

This event is being hosted at The Ant Hill in the Vine Street Neighborhood this Friday and begins at 9:00pm. For more information, you can consult the Facebook event page.

Local Band Highlight: George Costanza

We here at DIT Kalamazoo make it a goal of ours to showcase the touring acts coming through our fair city.  However, we don’t often highlight our rad local acts!  We aim to begin correcting this oversight. This week’s local highlight is for the dudes in George Costanza, who also happen to run Victory House.   Alex, Mitch, and Chris bring their goofball version of twinkly emo to shows in the area that often include acts like The Reptilian, Dowsing, and CityCop.

Check their recordings out at their bandcamp or if you want to see them play live, check out their facebook to find out where they’re going to be popping up next.

DIT Sessions

DIT Sessions is a new service developed by DIT Kalamazoo to help promote touring bands. We will offer free recordings to bands coming through the area, as well as produce a video of these sessions. Check DITsessions.com for contact info.

Jeremy Waun – “Momma I Ain’t Scurred”

Vince Dynamic – “Time To Let You Go”

Tim Tapper – “Silver Spoon”
