The KCAC presents the first ‘Summer Skillshare’!

The KCAC presents our very first event of this year’s Summer Skillshares:

Organic & Urban Gardening
with Gina of Under the Stone Garden and Katie of Tabitha Farms
3pm to 6pm
@ The Vine Neighborhood Association (509 Vine Street)

This 3-hour class will cover simple principles of organic gardening that you need to know to achieve basic success growing vegetables and herbs. Gina Wertz and Katie Pearson, local farmers, will cover soil health, plant and seed spacings, planting schedules (when to plant what), trellising, and organic pest/weed/disease management. We will also plant some seeds and transplant some baby plants, either in pots or a nearby community garden, for you to take home. We may also do some hands-on gardening work, such as weeding or bed preparation. Come prepared with anything you need to work in the dirt – gloves, boots or sneakers, your own trowel (the hand-size shovel), sunglasses, a jacket (in case its cold or windy), a few containers for starting seeds (yogurt or Solo cups will do), and any seeds you’d like to plant or share. Gina will bring potting soil, extra transplants, extra seeds, and a few gardening tools to demonstrate. The class will start indoors at the Vine Neighborhood Association and move outdoors if weather permits. There will be a minimum donation of $5 to attend, but if you cannot donate but want to attend, please come talk to a board member beforehand. Please register at www.theKCAC.org.

We are also looking for people to assist the workshop facilitators and to help with setup and tear down! If you are interested in volunteering with the KCAC, please fill out our volunteer app and submit to TheKCAC@gmail.com

Keep on the lookout for our next skillshares happening each Saturday from May 24 until June 28. See you there!

TONIGHT @ Touchdown City

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m still not tired of all the STACKED line-ups that we’ve booked in our small and enigmatic city. The show tonight follows suit with an excellent lineup of:

Secret Plot to Destroy the Entire Universe

Philly dudes laying down some intense and heartfelt tracks. Their sound makes me think of being in a dark room and being able to see colours and light in the distance. Heavy, full, rich, and full, punctuated by powerful and abrasive fits.

Natural Disasters

Fit Guy House’s own whiskey-guzzlin’ mean-muggin’ son’s ‘a guns.

NOHEALTH
>

Kinda new Grand Rapids dudes laying down intense jams.

Statia

They sound like Drew.

Show starts at 9PM! Respect the neighbors, respect the house and DONATE TO THE TOURING BANDS!
If you need the address, shoot us an e-mail! S’ya there.

6/2 — Astro Bats, Bat Cave, Sista Mista @ Louie’s

So this will be the second time I’ve written about Bat Cave without having seen them. I’m still really psyched to actually getting around to going to one of their shows, though. To reiterate: Batcave is Kzoo’s own: Matt Maverick, Andrew Mansberger, Isaac Lowery, and Matt Wood from such bands/acts as The Megaphones, Frank Fuzz, Tiny Rhythm, Philly Crawlers, respectively. Apparently they play some strange dance-y tunes. Based on their former bands alone, they are not an act to miss.

Astro Bats, from Grand Rapids, tag themselves as “psych”, “jazz and improv”, and “experimental”.

And lastly, Sista Mista.

Doors are at 8, show at 9. Ages 18+ $5. S’ya there.

5/12 – No Bails, Coma Nova, Brass Bows, Problems That Fix Themselves, I Gits Minze @ Louie’s

In the midst of all the crazy awesome shows coming up the show at Louie’s on the 12th is no exception. Showcasing 4 locals acts and 1 former-local project, the lineup throws you many different genres on one bill.

No Bails.

Problems that Fix Themselves.

Coma Nova.

As well as Brass Bows and I Gits Minze, who are both newer and the latter will be performing for the first time under this moniker.

With 5 bands, doors will be at 8. Show at 9. 18+ $5.
Come have a good time and tip yr bartender.

Bat Cave/Kyle Landstra/Deep Waters @ Fireplace Club 4/21/12

Big things are happening in Kzoo, folks. Big things done by our own talented and creative community! This Friday, one new-ish act will be playing at the Fireplace Club with two seasoned music scene vets.

Firstly: I’ve been hearing nothing but rave reviews about Bat Cave. Kzoo’s own Matt Maier, Matt Wood,  Isaac Lowery, among others, have collaborated to bring you some dancy tunes. I haven’t heard them yet myself, but I’m really really stoked to see them at this show.

Second: Deep Waters. Our very own DSK will be serving up some luscious and dreamy synth tunes to get lost in.

And last, but not least, Kyle Landstra, who creates the most thick ambient soundscapes will be chillin’ us out.

SO after you’ve had your fill of Record Store day [DO make sure to stop by Corner Record Shop and check out their sweet selection!], come kick it at J-Rugg’s house at about 9pm. S’ya there.

2/24 — The New Diet, Radiator Hospital, Everyone & Their Empty Cups, Blank @ Slaughter House

Tomorrow night, catch Chicago’s mid-fi DIY’ers New Diet, GR’s lofi folky-pop-punk Radiator Hospital, Kzoo’s own Everyone and their Empty Cups and Blank at the Slaughterhouse.

Show starts at 9 or 10ish, bring a couple bucks for the outta-towners. It’s gonna be a gnarly evening.

2/14 — The Fireplace Club Love Song Open Mic

It’s that time of year again. The time that decor magically shifts colours to red and pink and everyone becomes inexplicably infatuated with the idea of love. The time where sending someone an e-mail about how beautiful they are and how you’ve often admired them from afar or mysteriously leaving a sentimental forget-me-not on a person’s mode of transportation outside their workplace becomes a most acceptable and romantic idea.

In accordance with this most adorable sentiment, DiT and the Fireplace Club cordially invite you to the 3rd Annual Love Song Open Mic. In addition to a warm fire to hang out by, a guitar, bass, banjo, various percussive instruments, and a small drum kit will be provided for any attendees to serenade their sweetheart in a most amourous environment.

“We’ve made many special memories by the fire with some of Kalamazoo’s finest. Here is a recording from last year (http://www.mediafire.com/?pzseyn8zy8wkj8e), and the first one in 2010 (http://www.mediafire.com/?z8s4n8crq596dt5).

Really it’s the best way to spend valentine’s day, you don’t have to wallow in loneliness and you don’t have to buy anything.”

See you at the show.

1/27 — Chinook, Onn, Ozenza @ The Strutt TONIGHT!

It’s friiiiday, friiiiday, time for some shows. In the midst of the MASS AMOUNT of awesome music happening this weekend, this show is no exception.

At the Strutt tonight will be Chinook, a Michigan-based post-rock band. I’ve seen these guys a couple times and have never been disappointed. On top of that, to my knowledge, they haven’t played here in a minute, so it’s about time to see ’em again.

Also on the bill is Onn, a GR-based rock band with attitude.

And rounding out the evening, we’ll have Ozenza. Also GR-based, this stoner rock band has put on an excellent show each time I’ve seen them. Definitely do not miss these cats.

Doors at 9, show probably at 9:30 or 10. $5. You know the drill.

1/21 — Evan Greer and spiritchild tonight at the Wesley Foundation

Evan Greer and spiritchild are also playing tonight at the Wesley Foundation. This show starts promptly at 8 so you can make it to this one as well as the Strutt show or the Anthill show if you’d like [let’s face it, we all know those will most likely start at 9:30 or 10]!

The show is free. And there’s free ice cream! You know you wannaaaaaa!

1/21 — The Reptilian HOMECOMING SHOW with Living & Wrestling, Ackley Kid and Pan @ The Anthill

After nearly a month-long string of shows down through Texas, over to Cali and back, The Reptilian are playing the last show of their tour TONIGHT, right here in Kzoo.

Living and Wrestling, hailing from the Mitten State of Wisconsin, are along for the ride and will be serving us up some rad hardcore/screamo tunes. Check out the video for the first song off their EP [props to the person who shot it] :

And, of course, friends and hometown heroes Pan and Ackley Kid will be rounding out the bill.

Event’s posted here: http://www.facebook.com/events/235675396510077/

Show starts at 8, bring a couple bucks for the touring band. Respect the house, respect the people, respect yourself. Word is bond.
