DAVE BIXBY 6/27/11

When I used to work at The Corner Record Shop I would sometimes go up and fill shifts at the Grandville store. Some pretty amazing records came through the door but one that stood out to me was ‘Ode To Quetzalcoatl’ by Dave Bixby. The title, coupled with the strange minimalist artwork, intrigued me. Sometimes, you can tell a record is gonna be good just by looking at it.

I listened to the record and was immediately interested. One of the best psych/folk albums I’ve ever heard! A lot of music in that genre is typified by odd instruments, lots of effects, ambient instrumental sections and general psychedelic sounds. However, this album was mostly just Dave’s vocals and acoustic guitar with some natural reverb and echo. What really set it apart was the mood. Practically the definition of haunting pop. These are beautiful songs but played with a feeling of torture and isolation. There is a profound sense of passion and longing. No doubt that the music is completely genuine.

I did some research and found that the album was actually recorded in Grand Rapids in 1969. Apparently Dave was a part of a drug cult at the time. One evening he found God and decided to renounce his ways and live a life of sobriety and peace. He was then promptly abandoned by the cult, his friends and the local Christian group. Shortly after he wrote and recorded ‘Ode To Quetzalcoatl’ as a reflection on his new found convictions and loneliness.

I then found out from CRS’s owner, Steve, that the record was super rare and was the kinda thing vinyl nerds went crazy for. We put the album on ebay and as I remember it ended up selling for close to $1000. I found the whole thing fascinating as there seemed to be very little known of Dave since then. He recorded a few other albums with no real success or acclaim and then seemingly dropped off the face of the earth for 40 years. As a lover of obscure music, I’ve come across many artists with stories ending similarly. I can’t help but wonder where some of them are currently and what they’re doing.

Normally the story would end there. However, a few weeks ago I got a unexpected email from the musician Derrick Hart. He wanted to know if I’d be interested in helping set up a show for this guy he’s touring with. DAVE BIXBY. I couldn’t believe it! Instead of just wondering what happened to him, Derrick actually tracked the man down and convinced him to go out on another tour. AFTER 40 YEARS! This kind of thing just doesn’t happen often.

So, all this to say, the one and only Dave Bixby will be playing The Strutt TONIGHT. Joining him will be Derrick Hart, Peter Damien Cook and Silphium Blooms (Tyler Bassett). Cover is only $5 and music starts at 9pm. All ages are welcome.

If this sounds at all like something you’d be interested in, please help spread the word! Let’s make sure Dave feels welcomed!!

Forget The Tour

Hey there music fans!

As previously mentioned, our boys in Forget The Times are going on tour! Van leaves tomorrow night at 9pm. We’re throwing a last minute get together at No Fun House to see them off. If you’re feelin groovy, stop on over anytime after 4pm and hang with us! Gonna do some cookin and what not.

This party has two purposes. 1: To bring all our friends together and spread some love before the band hits the road for almost three weeks. 2: To try and raise a little extra support for the tour. FTT has some very long drives ahead of them with very very little money in their tour fund.

There are several ways you can help them! Donating a few bucks in person at No Fun House tomorrow; giving some food so they can afford to feed their van; purchasing a brand new FTT t-shirt that is being screen printed at this very moment; or by joining the ‘Sponsor A Postcard’ program.

FTT have just launched a tour blog and will be updating it daily with all kinds of road news, stories, pics, vids, field recordings and more. One of the features being that if you send them a paypal donation and include your address, they will return the favor with a special personalized postcard signed by the band. They’ll even mention you in a blog post and promo whatever band or endeavor you’re a part of. Not a bad deal!!

Then you might like what The Strutt has to offer this TONIGHT!

Two of Kalamazoo’s brightest newcomers are coming together to support a band touring all the way from Seattle, WA. I’m talking about TOTALLY RAD / NO BAILS / THE CURIOUS MYSTERY of course!!

After you’re done searching through the house for plastic capsules filled with teeth rotting processed sugar, eating far too much food, spending time with distant and unwelcomed relatives, or whatever else you’re supposed to do on Easter, come on down to your friendly neighborhood The Strutt and celebrate the correct way. BY WATCHING A KICKIN’ SHOW!!

Check it out:

The Curious Mystery has a lot going for them. They’ve got a killer garage/soul sound that many bands try for and few really pull off. Plus, they’re on one of the coolest and most respected indie labels, K Recs (Calvin Johnson, Kimya Dawson, Mahjongg, Old Time Relijun, City Center…).

The band has an amazing ability to jump between sweet soul melodies, lo-fi garage punk riffs and spaced out psych jams à la Captain Beefheart. All the while managing to stay fresh, interesting and concise.

We here at DIT(K) are more than a little excited to see them live!

You haven’t really been to a concert until you’ve seen local heavy weights Totally Rad. They’ve got just one goal: TO STOMP OUT WINTER’S LAST HOLD ON MICHIGAN AND BRING IN THE SUMMER FUN ONCE AND FOR ALL!!!

Totally Rad is a pop punk band with a heavy dose of surf rock throwback. Featuring members of HMS, Victory! that “just wanna play music that people can dance to.”

Rounding out the night is UFO Dictator‘s own garage punk gods and goddess NO BAILS! When the man behind such a legendary Kalamazoo record label starts a band, you know it’s gonna be good. They DO NOT disappoint!

Doors at 8:30. First band at 9:30. $5. ALL AGES

You may have heard something about the upcoming Acid Mothers Temple show at The Strutt. You may also be wondering what all the the fuss is about…

Finally, Forget The Times will be kicking things off as the local support. We’ll be fresh back from tour and hopefully bringing our ‘A game’.

Doors are at 8pm. First band at 9pm. Tickets are $10 advance/$12 door and can be purchased at The Strutt, Corner Record Shop Kalamazoo or thestrutt.com. 18+ (minors must be accompanied by a guardian)
