This Sunday (Sept 19th), The Strutt has a whole slew of amazing bands. Check it:
Arrington de Dionyso’s Malaikat Dan Singa –
They’re billed as “Indonesian Ecstatic Trance-Punk”. An accurate description for the new project from the founder of the swamp rock powerhouse Old Time Relijun. With Malaikat Dan Singa, Arrington has a big focus on exploring the potential of the human voice. The man has the ability to create sounds you would never think possible from a human. See for yourself.
On tour all the way from Seattle. If you got a chance to see them at either of their last two shows here with Minutes, you’ll know that these guys don’t bring the weak shit. Super heavy post punk at it’s best. Think Shellac or Mission Of Burma.
Chinook –
Everyone’s favorite local post math rock group. This band is nothing short of amazing.
Supercollider –
Local mostly instrumental math rock / post punk. These dudes played a No Fun House show a few months ago and everyone was completely impressed. I’m excited to see them again.
Show starts early at 8pm sharp. Chinook is opening this time so don’t be late. $7 at the door. See you there.
Excited about the big Rangda show tonight? The Gazette is. Check out this article from Kalamazoo’s own Mark Wedel.

If tonight’s show isn’t enough for you. Stay tuned for more info on future cool Strutt shows such as Avant Midwest Conference on 9/11; Caspian on 9/16, Tera Melos on 9/18, Malaikat Dan Singa & The Bismarck on 9/19, So Cow on 9/20, Shonen Knife on 9/22.
Are you coming to The Strutt‘s amazing show this Wednesday? If not, allow me to attempt to convince you otherwise. You probably have not heard of these bands before and might be wondering why you should care about this show. Here’s why:
Rangda is pretty much the supergroup of the decade. Comprised of Sir Richard Bishop from Sun City Girls, Ben Chasney from Six Organs Of Admittance and Comets On Fire, and Chris Corsano who has most recently been doing a lot of work with Bjork. Suffice it say that these guys have been around the bloc more than a few times and are pretty much masters of their instruments(guitar, guitar, drums). If you want more info, check out this interview or the video posted below.
Stare Case is the new project from Nate Young and John Olson. If you don’t know them by name, you’ve probably heard of their other band, WOLF EYES. Stare Case tends toward the more ambient side of noise. Some people have even called this their “blues project”. Check it.
Forget The Times is the brand new project from myself and Benji of Rotten Wood Moon, Peter of The Philly Crawlers and Jarad from Son Drop and just about every other band in Kalamazoo. We sound a lot like Rangda except we have an extra guitar player and maybe about 1/8th of the talent.
If this at all sounds like something you’d be interested in, PLEASE MAKE IT A POINT TO COME OUT. These first big shows at The Strutt are crucial. The more people we can bring out for shows like this, the more interesting bands I can start bringing in. Let’s work together and put Kalamazoo back on the map for cool music!!!
Then you should probably come to The Strutt tonight. We’ve got three bands playing that will be right up your alley. Not literally though, seeing as how two of the bands are from Rome, Italy. Check it out:
Rounding out the night will be local post everything noise rockers, Rotten Wood Moon. We haven’t played Kalamazoo in almost two months. So, come show your support and help us make these Romans feel welcome.
First bands kicks off at 9pm. ONLY $5. Make sure you bring a little extra for merch though. See you there.
We here at DIT Kalamazoo are always doing our best to keep this a community minded project. We’re dedicated to constantly setting up the best shows we possibly can, keeping you updated on upcoming cool shows and events and at the very least providing you with yet another entertaining way to kill time on the internet. However, all this work is extremely time consuming.
We’re always on the look out for new people interested in joining the team. We can use just about any skill you might have including: writing posts for the blog (show revues, album reviews), making/putting up flyers for shows, taking pictures or videos of shows, booking bands from all over the world, finding good local bands to open for them, making facebook events or just talking us up to everyone you know. If any of this sounds like something you can do, please stop on by the next meeting. FROM NOW ON ALL MEETINGS WILL BE HELD AT 210 ALLEN BLVD. EVERY SUNDAY AT 2PM. We’re friendly people. We promise.
Then come check out the sweet noise show at The Strutt on August 11th! If you’re not, then come check out the sweet noise show at The Strutt on August 11th and get into it!!! Just one week from tomorrow. For only $5, your mind will be thoroughly melted. Here’s what’s up:
Vertonen –

This Califonia noise maker has been at it since the early 90s. In true noise fashion, he has release somewhere around five hundred thousand albums on just about every format imaginable. This includes a split with Wolf Eyes side project Demons. He also runs the C.I.P. label in his free time (somehow).
Nerfbau / Take Up Serpents –

Noise minus a little bit of the ear piercing harshness. These guys are both on tour together. Check out their tour page for an idea of what to expect.
Dental Work – Noise by way of Traverse City, MI. This guy is super active in Michigan’s experimental music community. He books shows all over the state and runs Placental Recordings. He’s released albums for bands all over including Acid Mothers Temple and Cock ESP.
Boron Nuzzle – Kalamazoo’s own fun loving absurdists rockers. Sounds ranging from straight noise to free jazz to psych rock and everything in between.
Like I said, Only $5. Doors at 8pm. First band at 9pm. 18+. See you there.
Tomorrow night! No Fun House will be hosting two amazing ambient rock touring bands and one even more awesome local! What better way to spend a hot summer night then in a cool basement listening to some chilled out bands?
We’re Wolves – Jon Folet’s new indie rock band. Passionate vocals and groovy lo fi guitars. Think early Modest Mouse. Last time they were scheduled to play the house, the weather decided it couldn’t handle their awesomeness and shut our power off. That’s how good these guys are.
P. D. Wilder – Super droney ambient guitar layers that will make you feel like you’re drifting on a sea of music.
Summer Of Glaciers – Electronica meets Post Rock. As if Mogwai collaborated with M83. Totally rad. Check the video below for an idea of what you can expect.
9pm no punk rock time
$2 for the touring bands
Our friends over at Kalamazoo Noise snagged some cool footage of local math rockers, Good News live at the Koffee Klutch. Dig.
If you like this, be sure to come see them at No Fun House on July 30th with And I Was Like, What? and Fox & The Law.
We’ve added even more bands to the Midwest Noise Conference. It’s starting to look pretty rad. Check it out:
Our friend Pat Yankee is now officially confirmed. He will be performing as his noisy alter ego, Paranoid Time. Pat is a very active member of the noise community. He’s been booking noise shows for 10 years and runs SNSE Records. Pat will be helping to facilitate the event and is working on booking some really cool artists. More details TBA.
Dental Work – Noise merchant extraordinaire. Coming down from the cherry filled land of Traverse City. Aside from making music, he also runs a cool record label called Placenta Recordings.
This show will be part of a mini tour Dental Work is doing with Xrin Arms from California. Therefore, we’ll be getting performances from both of them. I know CA is not usually considered a midwestern state but who really cares?
We’ve also got two killer bands coming from Grand Rapids. Victory! and Ripped Dad. You may know Victory! as the rhythm section for the reformed Spit For Athena. They will be gracing us with their own special brand of Noise Core insanity. Ripped Dad has no internet presence yet. They still rule though. You can take my word for it. Ripped Dad is three of the members of Skeleton Party getting even more experimental then usual.
To top it all off, we have a lights show lined up for the later bands. Sid Redlin’s friend Ben Ruggles will be setting up some crazy visual effects once it gets dark. This is going to be awesome.
