3/28- INDIGO WILD / THE CLASS ACTS / EDITH @ Rey Mysterio’s

Tonight, Rey Mysterio’s is hosting an event that will seriously take you on a journey.

Indigo Wild

Warning: This music has a great deal of texture that could possibly cause an eargasm.

Indigo Wild is amazing group from Columbus, OH that is often defined as dream groove/ no-coast indie. That’s probably the best way to summarize them, but let me put emphasis on the beauty behind the instrumentation this group has created with their music. Don’t believe me? Just check out the recent release, “High Point” by going to:

www.indigowildmusic.com

Indigo Wild has been gaining a lot of hype throughout the midwestern music scenes. Along with their groovy tunes, they have an electric feel to their stage presence. Super fun to watch and hear, don’t miss out!

The Class

The Class Acts are a classy indie band from Kalamazoo. They’re music is big sounding with lots of vocals and instrumentation. The music itself seems to span the entire spectrum of what could define feel-good tunes. You can close your eyes and feel yourself sitting on some grass at a festival during songs like, “Jackie”. Other songs like, “Busy Work” offer that same feeling of goodness in your soul, but has a completely different feel. Just check it out for yourself!

Pretty much all I’m saying is: If you super duper hate feeling happy, this show probably isn’t for you. Sorry.

Edith

Edith, formally known as WWEMO, is a super mysterious group that just got going a few months ago. I’ve seen them once as WWEMO and it was pretty sick. Anyone who appreciates the local basement scene would dig this group.

So yeah. This show is going to be awesome. It’s going to start at 9 p.m. at Rey Mysterio’s. Get there early so you don’t miss any parts of this musical roller coaster.

It’s the music that was playing on a mixtape your first love made for you. You shared your first kiss while “Kowabunga” played in the back ground. It was sensational and left feeling like a punk rock rebel. You never listened to the lyrics until later when it became the mixtape that would cause you inexplicably cry while listening. Eventually, while sobbing, you found yourself ripping the tape out of the cassette deck saying something along the lines of, “this music keeps me from getting over you!” You shook your fists at God for making you such an emotionally misunderstood skater. You pushed the tape back into the player. You were angry until “…For the Painfully Alone” started playing. For the first time, you heard the lyrics and it dawned on that everything would eventually be fine. You drive into the night a new person, finally understanding the growing pains involved with growing up.

One day, Bill had enough of the bullshit. He thought about it deeply as he walked home from his middle school bus stop. For some reason, that night he prayed. Bill asked God for guidance while simultaneously cursing his mom for giving him this shitty, at home haircut that now warranted the nickname Elvis. Kids are cruel.
Bill dreamt of many things until suddenly his eyes opened Useless Eater stood in his room, holding a guitar and a skateboard. For some reason, Bill wasn’t afraid. Bill asked for advice. Eater said, “take these tools, get a haircut, go to basement shows, and your bully problems will be gone.” Faintly in the background Bill could hear a light beeping. It gradually got louder and turned chaotic as the songs from the album “Epyx Shredder” played over top. Visions of naked women and vert ramps took over his teenaged mind with splatters of quick trauma (like shits so big he bled type stuff).
He woke up that morning in a cold sweat.
From that day forward, things were different. Things made sense. He had a new nickname, Grease. E Dude. He loved it.

When Amy called Clarissa and said they were going to a basement show, Clarissa was less than enthused. She and Tyler had just broken up a few days before and she didn’t know how she would survive without the strong, quarterback arms of her ex. She wondered how he could do this so close to prom.
Amy assured Clarissa that everything would be fine. That this show would get her mind off things and that there would be lots of cuties there. Clarissa got out of bed, threw on some beat up hoodie and leggings, and walked downstairs. Her father was sitting in the recliner in the living room and turned to see her as she walked out the door. He usually felt the urge to say something about her outfits and how low cut the shirts were. When he saw her outfit, he smiled thinking perhaps that stage of her life was finally over. He stood up, walked to the mantle, kissed his shotgun and said, “I guess I won’t be needing you anymore, she’s all grown up and only respectable boys will come over now”. With that, he threw the gun in the lake.
Clarissa had never been to a house show before. She had never been to a show really. Except for Brittney Spears a few times in middle school. Amy told her these shows were different, that they were more fun and she’d meet way cooler people.
“Cooler?” Asked Clarissa.
“Yes, cooler,” said Amy.
“I don’t know,” said Clarissa, “Brian listens to stuff like punk and I don’t like it.”
“No,” sniped Amy. “Your brother listens to Tool and is a tool. You’ve never heard anything like this before.”
They walked into the basement as Disatronaut played. It was true, Clarissa hadn’t heard anything like this before. It was loud, yet poppy. She wanted to dance, but realized her years of ballet were futile in such a cramped space, so she just jumped up and down with everyone else.
Any other night, she would have been crying if someone had sweat on her. She would have been angry if her make up ran because she was too hot. She would have acted insulted it some punk rock dude hit on her, but not tonight.
She felt like she had lost it. Then found it. Then lost it again. In all the turmoil, she felt happy. She was dancing her ass off when suddenly a guy she went to school with tapped her on the shoulder.
“Grease?” She asked.
“Yeah, but here, my friends just call me Bill,” he said.

Weekend at The Forbidden Zone

Holy guacamole this weekend is going to incredible at The Forbidden Zone! Starting tonight, music of all different types will be showcased in what will soon be another legendary basement. The line up for the next two days is comprised of super energetic punk and surf music on Friday, and drudgy, multi-genre, weird-but-in-a-good-way music on Saturday.

12/5 – Ping Pong, Anybody But The Cops, Big Strong Boys, The Uncanny@ The Forbidden Zone

Warning: Punk Rock is not dead. The bands you will be hearing may make your head explode and your brain leak from your nostrils. You may experience breif amnesia because you can’t process how good this is going to be. Nothing after this night may really compare/ hold up. Now that you’re warned…

Ping Pong
bandcamp

IMG_3099.JPG
Ping Pong ia coming out from Ann Arbor to show us what’s what about psychI garage rock unlike anything you’ve ever heard!
Songs like, “Boogie Basement,” and “There She Is,” showcase how chill things start, but gradually become more noisy. The Adventures of Pete and Pete would have had this band on their soundtrack if they had existed back then. Don’t miss out!

Anybody But The Cops
bandcamp

IMG_3098.JPG
Usually when a bands genre is defined as “psycho (blank),” it’s usually tame in comparison to the pure psychosis Anybody But The Cops evokes. The band name is absolutely perfect for the way they play, as it is like you’re running as fast as you can, hopping fences, and being a badass. That’s right, the songs make you feel like a badass! The music is technical, fun, an unlike anything else in the scene right now. Don’t miss out.

Big Strong Boys
Now, I heard the word from a bird that Big Strong Boys are a local band that showcases hard beats a livetronics. Though I’ve never personally seen them, and I can’t seem to find anything online, I’m going to put it out there that they’re amazing and do something that’s been done before in a new way so it sounds outstanding. Kalamazoo bands never let me down before, and for this particular show, no one should be expecting less than greatness.

The Uncanny
The Uncanny

IMG_3096.JPG
Time to get weird. The Uncanny is a mystical, phsyco-surf band. Comprised of all local artists, The Uncanny brings a new feel to an old genre. Some of their work is completely instrumental and easy to get lost in. It’s so good because it would be just a great in an old batman episode as it is now. Other work is chaotic with thrashy lyrics and slight uneasiness. It gives surf a new name as issued by a band from the state with the most coast line in the continental U.S.

This event will start at 9 pm. It’s gonna be rad, so don’t feel bad about throwing down $2 to support the touring act. Below is a FB link to the event page where the address becomes easy to find. Have fun!

But wait… There’s more…

12/6 – Mudwest, Liberte, Obscene Color @ The Forbidden Zone

It’s about time we took it down a notch. BUT WE CAN’T HELP OURSELVES. If you can’t handle the heat, get out of the kitchen!

Mudwest

IMG_3095.JPG
On their Facebook page, the band Mudwest says this about themselves:

” About: God Awful. Loud and Sad. Lansing,
MI.”

OH MY GOD, THEY ARE SO FREAKING AWESOME! Their music is so droney, but so hype. I can’t explain why it’s impactful, it’s just easy to get lost in. Seeing them live will surely be loud and sad. God awful, though? More like God awesome!

Liberte
Facebook!

IMG_3093.JPG
This Livonia garage band is full of energy and ready to rock. They started in 2011 and released the song, “Shoes”. The song was rockin’, and left audiences waiting for more. Since then, their work has been much more secretive and lives through live shows. Don’t miss out!

Obscene Color
Bandcamp!!!

IMG_3094.JPG
Obscene Color is a multi-genre band based out of Detroit. Their music is rock with a hint of alternative. It’s pretty and melodic with a certain heaviness that isn’t too overbearing. It’s really good stuff, so don’t miss out!!!!!

This show starts at 9. Please bring a little cash to the event as all the bands are travelers and need gas. It’s going to be super fun, so put on your party boots and see an awesome show.

TWO AMAZING SHOWS. TWO AMAZING DAYS. THE FORBIDDEN ZONE. <em>DON’T MISS OUT!

The Reptilian/Caddywhompus/Mold- Bespin 11/15

Saturday, November 15th
9:00 PM at Bespin AKA Cloud City

Tonight is going to be a crazy night full of rocking music, heavy guitars, and emotional lyrics. Three math core bands will be showing off the technicalities behind pretty music. Please bring a little money for Merch and the touring band. You won’t regret the investment.

The Reptilian

IMG_2948.JPG
The Reptilian is a local mathcore/Emo band that has become a bit of a staple in the underground community of Kalamazoo. If you haven’t been to a show of theirs yet, you’d best be asking yourself why not? Not only is the music killer, but the crowd is loyal and loving. Seeing The Reptilian is always an experience, so don’t miss out.

Caddywhompus

IMG_2949.JPG
Caddywhompus hails from New Orleans, Louisiana and they bring a new twist to the guitar/drum duo. They offer a large sound despite their small set up. They’re on Community Records and have an album called, “Feathering The Nest”. They’re noisy, melodic, and most importantly, rockin.

Mold

IMG_2950.JPG
Mold is a Kalamazoo band said to have been born in the dredges of Snowpocolypse 2014. As we all remember, this period of time presented a new form of brutality. As we traveled through deadly nights reaching record breaking lows of -40 degrees. We should have fucking died, but we didn’t. For the members of Mold, who used the time to fester in anger and get super, mega, really good at playing their instruments, a new breed of music was born. Come witness as history is made and feel the chill that ever aches as more snow comes.

Time to change your underwear because that record you’ve been soiling your pants over since you learned the existance of Bonehawk is finally being released at Louie’s. The full-length album, “Albino Rhino” delivers a rockin’, heavy sound that’s super fuzz scratches something into your immortal soul.

For those who aren’t familiar with the group, prepare yourselves to rock. This band rocks and they rock super hard. They use their heavy guitars with twin harmonies to create visuals through sound. With songs like “Tonight We Ride,” and “Sexy Beast,” your head may never stop banging.

10/27/14 – CAPTURED! BY ROBOTS / RICK JOHNSON ROCK AND ROLL MACHINE / KATY NEEDS A LIFE @ LOUIE’S TROPHY HOUSE

I hope you all have your party boots on because Louie’s Back Room isn’t letting this weekend of fun end until Monday. This event will be featuring the last performance from Katy Needs A Life, a Rock and Roll Machine that’s not been out for some years, and some mother frickin’ robots. It’s going to be an event that will prepare you for Halloween and keep you stoked for what’s to come in the future.

Captured! By Robots

So, I could go on and on for days about how Jay Vance is my hero and I’ve been listening to his music since I was in the fifth grade. I could say something about how he started the Blue Meanies when he was in college, the legendary Ska band from Chicago. I could also go on and on about what his show is like and how awesome it will be to see live because its actually instrument-playing robots that Vance built. However, I received this e-mail from the robots a few weeks ago, and I believe that they can tell their story better than I can.

captured! By Robots

2 kick ass robots, 1 stupid human. Brutal pummeling music. End of story.
But you wanna read more stupid crap? Ok, idiot human.

C!BR has been touring the world since 1997, playing thousands of dive bars for millions of drunk humans.

In 1996, Jay Vance made the robots because he was extremely unlikeable, and wanted to play in a band after all his past human bands hated him. He got to work. Shortly after, GTRBOT666 and DRMBOT 0110 were born. After a horrible accident involving many drugs and a chemical spill, the Bots became self aware and captured the human, now renamed JBOT. It was decided that they would travel the country, rocking out while bent on world domination and humiliating the masked and chained idiotic human in front of his human peers.

In 2013, a critical point was achieved in robotic/human symbiosis. The Bots over went their sixth upgrade, developing human faces in an attempt to fool the pathetic humans into lowering their guard, not unlike decoys in duck hunting.

Humans are now the hunted! Hahaha!

As well, JBOT’s chains and mask were removed, after 15 years of captivity the chains were no longer needed as they were now chains of the mind, and removal of the mask serves to show how ugly and disgusting the human JBOT really is.

The Bots and JBOT’s relationship has changed, now they are much more united in hating humanity. Stockholm syndrome? Maybe… Or maybe you all just suck really really bad.

C!BR’s newly found united aggression towards humanity has been channeled into fast n loud music, designed to deafen and destroy, to pound and pummel, breaking your bones with brutal tones.

So that’s it. End of story for reals.
But one more thing…
Fuck you, human!

So yeah… They aren’t the nicest robots, but the show is going to be killer.

Rick Johnson Rock and Roll Machine

rickbands

Rick Johnson Rock and Roll Machine hasn’t done a solo show in years now and that’s a damn shame. Can you imagine, for just one moment, the most beautifully chaotic, energetic and borderline spastic music that reminds you that neither punk nor rock and roll are dead. Rick’s charisma makes you want to dance even though you don’t know how. He’s legendary. Besides the Rock and Roll Machine, Rick is also known for his work in Bomb the Music Industry, Wack Trucks, and Mustard Plug. Who knows when this act will happen again, so don’t miss out.

Katy Needs A Life

Okay, okay, okay. Ego, ego, ego. I don’t like to toot my own horn as a performer, but as it’s my last show, it’s going to be hype. This act has been going on for the last seven years and has progressively gotten better and better. Songs like, “Dragons in Love” have given people something to smile about just as songs like, “Albatross” have given people something to cry about. Essentially, it’s all happy music about sad things. Something that started out as an act for a high school talent show has brought years of fun and notably awkward experiences. I hope that many will join me for my send off as I embark on the journey towards learning to work well with others.

Brown Cow/ Alicia Dawn Smith/ Turner Cody/ Morgan Orion @ Satellite 08/20

Tonight will be an amazing night to listen to folky, surfy, rockin, sway-worthy tunes at Satellite Records.

BROWN COW!!!

IMG_1657.JPG
Do you remember that one time that some chick broke your heart and as you got into your car to leave her house you were bitten by a radioactive monkey who gave you the capability to write like Bright Eyes and get people to sing along with your misfortune? Brown Cow is a Kalamazoo local group who has managed to bring the words sad and pop together for some of the happiest sad music around. You may find yourself dancing and crying all at the same time. It’s insane. Just awesomely insane.

ALICIA DAWN SMITH!!!
Alicia Dawn Smith’s music will make you think and keep you begging for more. Prepare to feel the calm wash over you as she serenades you to wherever your emotions may take you. There will be no link below, for you must bare witness to this in real life. There’s a possibility that your head may just explode if you miss out.

TURNER CODY!!!

IMG_2499.JPG
Turner Cody is coming out to visit our scene from Brooklyn. His acoustic music is as rich as his voice which sends the chillest chill down your spine. Some of the work, like “Abaraxis Foyer,” sounds like that folky-country sound that will flow throughout the night. Other pieces, like “Underground,” sound reminiscent of Little Joy that makes you bop your head and poke at the sky (because that’s how you dance).

MORGAN ORION!!!

IMG_2498.JPG
Morgan Orion is coming over from Illinois for this occasion. Some of his music sounds like straight country-folk, but other songs sound like surf music with a violin and what sounds like a gospel choir quietly humming along. Even solo, he should be able to keep the energy flowing with his clever licks and lyrics with a semi apathetic feel behind his words.

The show tonight will start at 9 and is donation based. Please donate. For the people who traveled from all over just to make our night special, we gotta share the love. See ya there!

The Counter Elites

http://mycounterelites.com/

Prepare to get kicked in the face by rock-n-roll!  The Counter Elites are traveling all the way from the dirty D to bring Kzoo that classic punk rock sound.  The music is reminiscent of the Ramones, Dead Kennedy’s, and Crass.  The songs range in meaning, but are mostly politically .

 Inflatable Best Friend

Folk at House of Cards

It’s starting to get cold, so lets get cheery and listen to folk!

Tim Tapper
https://soundcloud.com/tim-tapper
This music has a vast musical range to accompany beautiful lyrics with a major undertone of activism. Songs like, “Temporary Place”, “Open Mouth, Insert Foot,” keep you begging for more. This music will surely tug on your goddamn heartstrings.

Alex Young

Electric and technical, let’s follow Alex Young through his dreamy guitar licks and poetic voice. His lyrics are have are almost transcendentalist in the sense that you know what he’s saying, but it can mean so much more.

Alex Kostka
http://alexkostkamusic.bandcamp.com/
Let’s all band together then sing and sway to the music by Alex Kostka. His songs will keep you thinking and will linger in your mind long after they’re over.

Have some fun listening to and being around a really awesome guy!

Amazingness is happening at House Of Cards tonight starting at 8.

Also, if this show isn’t enough fantastic folk for ya, there’s another show at Ruperts featuring Wood Spider, La Ruche, and Maray Fuego.
