ANML FCS/BNDR/Reptilian/Jowls @Anthill 6/9

I feel privileged to live in a city that hosts awesome shows on any given day during the week all throughout the year.  Case in point: on Saturday, June 9th, Anthill will be hosting what promises to be one hell of a good show.

Toronto based 3 piece ANML FCS will be bringing Kalamazoo some insane jams in the post-hardcore vein of bands such as Caravels or Beau Navire. Check out their bandcamp and watch this video:

Joining ANML FCS on their tour are fellow Toronto-based group BNDR, who have 3 excellent releases that have had me smashing the repeat button. If you were one of those people who fell apart when Cloud Mouth broke up, you’re not going to want to miss these guys play.

Grand Rapids buds Jowls are heading down to join the party and will be bringing some heavy hitting tunes that’ll make the hairs on your toes stand on end. They just put out a sick album called Cursed earlier in mid-May. Go check it out on their bandcamp! I even linked it for you.

And of course, no amazing show (at least in my eyes) is ever complete without The Reptilian. Embrace your surroundings!

Show starts at 9. As always, please bring cash for the touring bands. If you don’t, look through your couch for change. No excuses. Check out the event page on facebook for more information: https://www.facebook.com/events/184779081645621/

Living&Wrestling/Life in Vacuum/Rise into Ruin/17 Again @ Milhouse 6/10

This Sunday, Milwaukee screamo revivalists Living & Wrestling return to Kalamazoo at the Milhouse for an aural assault on us all. The last time they played here at the Anthill was a real treat. Go listen to their bandcamp or check out this vid for their tunes:

Joining Living & Wrestling are prog punkers Life in Vacuum. I’ve never seen these guys play, but their recordings are killer. They’ve got a similar feel to the Hives but with more of math-y vibe, so it’ll be a good time.

Representing Grand Rapids are metalhead punx Rise into Ruin . Fans of dual guy/girl vocals and Headnoise are going to like these guys and girl. Side note: Milhouse member Jose recently joined the band to play guitar so you won’t want to miss this since they don’t play very often.

For our local, some of the dudes from Forget the Times, The Reptilian, and Ackley Kid came together to form a band that takes a bit of inspiration from Botch. Don’t miss it.

As always, bring a little cash for the touring bands. Show starts at 9. Seeyathere.

Local Band Highlight: George Costanza

We here at DIT Kalamazoo make it a goal of ours to showcase the touring acts coming through our fair city.  However, we don’t often highlight our rad local acts!  We aim to begin correcting this oversight. This week’s local highlight is for the dudes in George Costanza, who also happen to run Victory House.   Alex, Mitch, and Chris bring their goofball version of twinkly emo to shows in the area that often include acts like The Reptilian, Dowsing, and CityCop.

Check their recordings out at their bandcamp or if you want to see them play live, check out their facebook to find out where they’re going to be popping up next.

5/1: Forget The Times TOUR KICKOFF! with Alpha Couple/Jeremy Ruggles/Anybody But the Cops

A friendly reminder for you to not miss this Tuesday night!  Milhouse will be hosting another rad living room show that will mark the start of Kalamazoo’s own noise rockers Forget The Times’ 25-day May tour with Br’er, Jeremy Ruggles and his Echo Chamber Family Band, and jazzy punk newcomers Anybody But the Cops (performing their very first show).

Curious about what you’ll be experiencing? Check out Alpha Couple on their tumblr.  I personally am really excited to see these guys play.  Their version of low-fi acoustic noise is tender and sweet with an undercurrent of cacophonous elements that give their recordings a well-rounded, unique sound.

The show starts at 8p, and is donation based. If you feel so inclined, please bring a couple of bucks to support the bands. Alpha Couple and Forget the Times both need cash for their journeys.

4/21: The Reptilian Homecoming show w/ Dads, You Me & Us, and Blink 182 coverband

April brings the return not only of warmer weather, but also of our dear friends The Reptilian who are returning with a couple of special friends.  Milhouse’s basement will be opening up for the first time to host this show since the legendary Deerblood House stopped hosting shows a couple of years ago. Here’s a preview of what you’ll be hearing.

DADS: Sad that Snowing are no longer around? (provided you know who they are)  Have no fear, DADS might be able to relieve some of those awful feelings.  With just a guitar, a set of drums, and some honest lyrics, DADS will bring Kalamazoo their version of twinkly emo from New Brunswick, NJ.  These dads will be a hell of a lot more fun than your dad could ever hope to be.  Pinky promise.

You Me & Us: These guys and gal bring infectious garage surf pop from their home in SoCal.  Similar to Best Coast and Girls, but all that much sweeter (with, perhaps, a tinge of bitterness), you’ll find yourself imagining long walks on sunny beaches, sand between your toes, and eating bubblegum ice cream in a sugar cone.  Or at least, that was my first thought.  Summer may still be a couple of months away, but I’m sure you’ll be just as warm watching this band play live.

Chances are if you’re reading this article, you already know who The Reptilian is. Really, they need no introduction.  Just in case you don’t though, why not watch this video?

And lastly, but surely not least, the gods of pop punk, Blink-182 Tribute have returned for an encore of some sick tunes from the band we all love to hate and hate to love (or just plain love).  Be prepared for sing-alongs, whether you feel like it or not.

Please, please, please bring cash for the donation jar.  Gas is around $4 a gallon these days. Help these guys move forward!  The show starts at 9.  See you there!

4/18: Beast In the Field, sleepeater, US Bear Force @ Louie’s 18+

Publicly documented as Michigan’s loudest band, Doom Stoners Beast In the Field return to Kalamazoo on Wednesday at Louie’s Trophy Bar in what promises to be a noise violating, tinnitus-inducing night to remember.  They come supported by Grand Rapids ambient metal outfit sleepeater, and Kzoo newcomers US Bearforce, which features members of Ackley Kid, Lincoln County War, The Almanac Shouters, and The Mushmen.  Here’s a couple of videos of what you can expect:

The  show starts at 9p and is $5 and 18+. It will guarantee to leave you with broken eardrums and a smile on your face.  Ouch.

3/31 D.W.I/White Lightning/Bruxism @ Slaughterhouse

If you find yourself looking for a party with some rad music (or music with a rad party), Kalamazoo has a lot of options for you.  Unable to make it out to Spraynard/Paul Baribeau at Fat Guy House or just not interested? Have no fear! Slaughterhouse is hosting Buffalo thrash punx D.W.I. with Bruxism, White Lightning, and more on the same night so plenty of opportunities for a party!

Details for the event are located here: https://www.facebook.com/events/253155888108734/ The show will start later to give those of us interested in both shows a chance to attend both.  As always, please bring cash for the touring bands, respect the space, and others around you. See you there.

3/31 @ Fat Guy House: Spraynard/Paul Baribeau + 3 SG

Saturday, March 31st, Fat Guy House will be play host to the most righteous of shows.  Pennsylvania Pop Punkers Spraynard are touring with Michigan native Paul Baribeau in one promises to be a basement show you don’t want to miss out on.  Here’s a quick rundown of what’s happening that night:

The dudes in Spraynard will bring us punk rock vaguely similar to Set Your Goals and Four Year Strong. I’m talking the good stuff. The stuff that makes you want to dog pile with your best friends and shout along with reckless abandon. Maybe throw in a few PBRs in there for good measure.  I can’t imagine a better way for you to spend your night.

Twee folk extraordinaire Paul Baribeau (of Plan-It-X ilk) will be bringing us heartfelt stories of falling in love, falling out of love, and everything in between. If you like artists like Kimya Dawson, Toby Foster, or Ghost Mice, I think you’ll be interested in checking this guy out.

Joining us from Lansing is Homelife, who will be performing emotionally-driven punk tunes in the vein of Title Fight and Basement.  Local support includes Bike Tuff and Natural Disasters, who are both just by themselves worth your love and support in going to this show.

I, personally, am extremely excited about the fact that this is happening in my hometown. I encourage you all to make it out if you are able. Remember: these are donation based, so bring some cash for the touring acts. If you don’t know how to get there- ASK. Email us at ditkalamazoo(at)gmail.com or message one of the facebook organizers! The show will start close to 9 or so- see you there.

3/2: Our Lady, George Costanza, Blank, and Blink-182 (sorta) at Victory House

Get pumped for Friday night! Victory House is hosting Springfield, Illinois jammers Our Lady and a bunch of other sweet bands including a (prepare for a nostalgia attack) Blink 182 cover band.

Our Lady: pop punk with folk sensibilities, these guys (and girls!) bring all kinds of fun hooks that you’ll find yourself shouting and singing along to even if you don’t feel like it!

The best buds in George Costanza are bringing their flavor of punk rock, by which I mean pretty guitars mixed with angsty, angry vocals. Not to be missed, for sure. Also I’m pretty sure this is the sexiest band name I have ever heard. Unf.

Blank: grimey, grungey rock ‘n’ roll tunes. These gnarly dudes are prepared to take us back to the 90s, while still keepin’ it real and relevant. Party On, Kalamazoo.

And of course, Milhousers Jarad, Josh, and Jose will be performing as Blink-182, who need no introduction of course. Let’s just hope they dress the part.

Show starts at 9, bring some donation money for the touring act. Those kids have to get home somehow.

2/26: Living Room, Itto, and The Reptilian @ Fat Guy House

This Sunday’s gonna rage hard.  Make the necessary preparations, because you’re not going to want to miss this one.  Fat Guy House is hosting a sweet show which will include Brooklyn pop punkers Living Room, Chicago Math/Screamo outfit Itto, and our very own progressive post-punkers The Reptilian.

It’s always refreshing to hear such blatant honesty come through in a band’s music. It draws me in and keeps me wanting more. Living Room is one of those bands.  Fans of The Wonder Years, Polar Bear Club, and Title Fight will be interested in checking these guys out.

Itto will bring a good mix of screamo (the good kind, I promise) and math elements to the table. They sound like a good time, and I’m sure they’ll deliver.  If you’re into Circle Takes the Square, City of Caterpillar, or Hot Cross you should come hang out with us and see these guys play.

Lastly, I’ve got the pleasure of talking a bit about our own hardworking dudes in the Reptilian. They’ve been touring relentlessly for the past few years and gaining a lot of attention for their intense live shows.  I am consistently impressed with every new project they come out with. I’m assuming most of you reading this have seen them play but just in case you haven’t, I’d say if you’re interested in Suis La Lune, Daitro, or Saetia you’ll have a fun time with these dudes.

I picked up the 7″ split they have with Innards at the last show I saw them play (it is, of course, stellar) and I assume they’ll be selling it at this show so you should pick it up if you have any extra dollars laying around after paying for all the touring bands’ merch.

Speaking of touring bands, bring a couple bucks for the donation jar. The bands appreciate it because it keeps them playing and fed.  See you there!
