Folking Things Up At The Black Lodge Nov. 4

Since the Black Lodge began booking shows earlier this year, they have sported a myriad of genres. Adding to this diverse presentation, they’ll be showcasing acts of a varied folk tradition.

FOLK Y’ALL are an old-timey 3-piece with an up-to-current day edge from Connecticut. Mandolin picking, guitar strumming, twangy singing, this group is going to get your feet tapping and maybe even have you singing along.

Also featuring locals:

NICK DEMOTT rough ‘n’ tumble political/personal folk punk

JEREMY RUGGLES experimental, ambiguous and thought provoking acoustic

ARMS AKIMBO mellow, thought-filled singer-songwriter

Show starts at 9:00 and donations will be collected for the touring folks.

No Fun House Solo Acoustic Show 10/25

Three pensive, melodic artist will be performing Thursday, October 25th at the No Fun House. This show features folks who are not usually spotted in this setting, and a touring act featuring an instrument not usually seen either.

SILPHIUM BLOOMS is a long-time solo project of Tyler Bassett, guitarist of the Nwe Sprytes. Though he has been playing under this name for a few years, the projects emergence for a show is a rare occurrence  one you do not want to miss.

JOSH MILLER of William Bonney/Forget The times/Seventeen Again will be performing something very different from what one who knows those projects can expect. Instead of screaming and thead bobbing, expect a lyrically driven solo performance. This will also be Josh’s first solo show, so come out and support this rad dude who is always so supportive of the music scene here!

STILL SWEET features Darian Scatton, member of the Philadelphia band Br’er who were in town last month for the Already Dead Family Reunion. Still Sweet is a solo harp performance, something you do not usually experience in a living room (or any?) setting.

High-Energy Punk at the Fat Guy House 8/11

Fat Guy House is notable for bringing in solid touring acts, combining them with well fitting and sick as hell locals, and this is of course no exception. These experts of pop punk have for you on this Saturday night:

Hold Tight! are traveling from Richmond to bring you no -nonsense straight up pop punk. High-energy music with relatable lyrics, it’s exactly what you want done just as you want it.

Pedals On Our Pirate Ships draw from many influences and sounds, having been an acoustic act now moving into being a full-fledged plugged in punk group, but also featuring duel male/female vocals and keyboards currently. Their sound is solid, and is sure to get you moving.

The locals are two you know and love, George Costanza and Bike Tuff. Though they likely need no introduction, George Costanza is an exellently dynamic tappy-emo 3-piece, and Bike Tuff are a hard-hitting pop punk band with a solid sound made by solid dudes.

Show is at 9, and donations are collected because Pedals and Hold Tight! are both on the road, so bring some bucks.

Experimental Pop Music at No Fun House August 1st

The No Fun House will be having a collection of talented, catchy solo musicians and songwriters that should not be missed.

EMPEROR X is a writing and touring powerhouse, whose dedication to his craft cannot be denied. as such, the results of his efforts are phenomenal. Lyricism that is hardly rivaled, and inventive guitar styles, this music is as catchy as it is innovative.
But don’t just take my word for it:

STEPHEN STEINBRINK is also on tour, bringing warped but beautiful pop from another time. Reminiscent of The Dukes of Stratosphear/Andy Partridge, as well as the lightest, strangest Ween songs, Steinbrink creates well-orchestrated, lush pop music.

RADIATOR HOSPITAL is the creation of Sam Cook-Parrott, Grand Rapids songsmith extraordinaire. Radiator Hospital is fuzzed-out power-pop that expresses infatuation and heartbreak simultaneously, with clever, though blunt writing, complete with sci-fi references. This also may be Sam’s last show in Kalamazoo for a long, long while so you do not want to miss!

BENJI MYERS is local puppy, myth, legend, who has performed in many local acts, including Witch Fingers, Lincoln County War, and Mushmen currently. A busy character in Kalamazoo music, Benji is a prolific and impassioned songwriter, so you may want to see what he brings to the table as a solo performer.

This show starts at 8 PM so GET THERE ON TIME.

6/2 Swands of Zapan, Forget The Times, Coma Nova, Edgar Cayce @ Victory House

Victory House has one of the most diverse show spaces in town, and this show continues to bolster that reputation.

Swands of Zapan are a long-time running noise psych-punk group based out of Saginaw. Their music is comparable to Chrome or Old Time Relijun, intense, strange, and hard hitting.

This show will also feature FORGET THE TIMES, hometown saviors of soul, COMA NOVA, your neighborhood grunge rock revival, and EDGAR CAYCE, who I can find literally no information on, so you may as well just go see for yourself.

Keir Neuringer / Saxquatch / Joshualien @ Victory House 5.14

Victory House presents experimental tunes for your listening pleasure!

Keir Neuringer previously played in Kalamazoo at Milhouse last winter, and is gracing us with his presence again. Keir is a multi-instrumentalist experimental composer, making strange and beautiful works, often based in Saxophone. His performance is captivating.

Saxquatch, well known local saxophonist will also be performing, with Matt Wood (of Batcave / Philly Crawlers) on drums. They have never performed together in this manner, so you’ll want to check it out.

Joshualien is a local minimalist electro artist who will make you feel like your in a trance playing an old-school videogame. Or that you want to dance. Or some other emotion you’ve not yet experienced.

The show starts at 9 PM, and will be donation based as Keir is traveling, so please bring a couple dollars if you can.

How Anyone Can Make A Flyer To Promote Their Show Without Fail – A Lesson In Old School Show Promotion

It’s fairly simple to make a flyer. Though the imagery can be really important as far as grabbing someone’s attention, first and foremost is the importance to the details of the show. It does you no good to have an eye-catching image if information is missing, or is difficult to read, so keep in mind:
-Who is playing
– where are they playing
-if you can or cannot contain an address
-how much does it cost
-when is it
-and where can you find more information

The way I’ve been designing flyers is to first draw the image that I want to use. I like to use high-contrast black and white as my style, as printing black and white is cheap, and you don’t want details getting muddled in the transition from color to b&w. You could do something much more detailed/colored/cut and pasted, which a lot of people have done to good effect as well. Just make sure you have in mind where your text will be, and that it can be big enough to be legible.

I’ve started designing my text on a separate piece of paper, and then digitally editing the text and image together. Depending on your style, or access to digital editing, this might not be viable. There’s always the effective old school way of cutting, pasting and xeroxing at kinkos. It works well, and requires no major computer knowledge.

Some other tips I can throw in is, if the show or event is free, make sure that’s known! Not having to spend money is really enticing. If you don’t collect a specific amount of money, but do have touring groups to help out, it would be good to include that donations are taken, just so people can know to have a bit of cash on them when they show up. In this digital age, telling people a website or a keyword to search for to find more information is generally a good idea. I make sure to put DITKalamazoo.com on all of my flyers.

Lastly, keep in mind that this is a fun way of having a bit of visual expression. You don’t need to be a visual artist to make a good flyer. Ann Arbor flyer maker Shelley Salant’s style is to make the only imagery on the flyer the relevant text, done in bold magic markers. This is clear, concise, attention grabbing, and is a signature style.

3.12 Ambient/Experimental Show at Milhouse

Monday, March 12th, Milhouse will be bringing you the finest in dark, experimental ambient sounds by way of local powerhouse Forget The Times, as well as two touring acts out of Buffalo, NY – Martin Freeman and T.J. Borden.

Both touring artists can be heard on their respective soundclouds (http://m.soundcloud.com/t-j-borden/tracks and http://m.soundcloud.com/martin-freem) but from what I have been informed, seeing their performances live is where it’s really at.

And as many of us in Kalamazoo are well aware, Forget The Times has an ever-changing cast, so you should check out and see what sort of set up they will have this time around.

The show will also include a potluck beginning at 7 PM, so if you can, bring a dish to pass and/or some money to donate to the touring acts.
