5/14 – Tim Tapper, Bandname, Philly Crawlers @ the Strutt FREE FREE FREE!

That’s right. A free show at the Strutt on Saturday, May 14 at 9pm.

Tim Tapper is a familiar Kalamazoo face to many of us. His tendency towards sincere lyrics and a potent combination of clear melody and heavy walls of sound have appeared in many past projects. Tim favors the solo sound currently, appearing once again on the scene with fresh and candid songs that ring true.

Band Name is a caustic, fun punk band from Philly.

The Philly Crawlers are the purest form of Kalamazoo psychedelic alterna indie fun rock roll rock that there is.

1/22 – Harlequins, White Lightning, the Wrap @ the Ant Hill

It’s kinda grainy, but that’s Ackley Kid’s own Zach Smith circa 2006 belting out the street punk anthems with his old Flint-area band, the Harlequins. These dudes are gonna bring it all back for a reunion show at the Ant Hill tonight… get out your hair glue, plaid pants, and wallet chain, cause the streets is back. UP THE PUNX!

Also getting quite low and gritty will be punkers White Lightning and hip-hop spazz-ercise party monsters The Wrap. Show starts at 9ish.

1/24 – Foghorn String Band @ the Strutt

“The Foghorn Stringband plays old time string band music deeply rooted in the American folk tradition. It’s a pre-copyright, post-bluegrass style, but the Foghorns put their own stamp on it… It’s a sound that could be coming to you from a big console radio in a 1930′s living room, or an Appalachian front porch; instead it’s being delivered by a group of players from the thriving old time music scene of Portland, Oregon.”

This all-ages show starts at 7 pm, doors at 6:30 pm.
Jamming and dancing to follow the set.

PRE SHOW WORKSHOPS:
Fiddle, Mandolin and Guitar workshops offered,
including a light supper at Redbud Farm.
Reservations: Call Marilyn Branch to secure a spot! 343-5280

12/30 – Saxsquatch All-Stars Party @ the Strutt!

This here’s the Saxsquatch in case you didn’t know. He plays the saxophone like a drowning man who can see the shore, just like Captain Beefheart would have liked it (God rest his soul).

Saxsquatch can be spotted cranking out the jazz with his main bandfellows, Bridge Band, and blows all over many Kalamazoo acts, including the Dynamics, Max Dandyslax, Graham Parsons and the Go Rounds, Duke & the Loose Cannons and many more. On December 30, he’s bringing all of the wildest players he can find out to the Strutt for an All-Star Revue of Epic Proportions.

NO COVER! DRINK SPECIALS! WILD TIMES! BE THERE!

12/27 – Peggy Wray, Birdfingers, Gitis Baggs @ the Strutt

Mr. Gitis Baggs is a conspicous face in the local music scene. You can catch him blowin’ up with the Go Rounds or shaking maraccas with Tiny Rhythm, but what many folks don’t know is that Baggs is an accomplished recording artist and songwriter hisself. Its like the Beatles and the Byrds and Bryan Wilson all together. You’ll like it.

Joining Gitis at the Strutt tonight will be haunted folksinger Peggy Wray and mysterious space warrior Birdfingers. Door is $3, show starts at 9.

12/22 – Tiny Rhythm, Robin Parrent (Violent Ear) @ the Strutt

If I owned a circus hall of mirrors, I’d pipe Robin Parrent through the loudspeaker. Why? He’s got that perfectly spooked-out soul sound that can be fun and unsettling at the same time.

Jungle-Kraut-Rock dance party starters Tiny Rhythm are gonna keep it loud and wild. These guys got the place rattling yesterday at open mic night. Don’t miss em.

12/17 – TV Ghost, People’s Temple, Forget the Times @ Louie’s

Indiana’s TV Ghost are the kind of noisy rock n roll band that you want to listen to while drag-racing a stolen car. They’ll be freaking out at Louie’s Trophy house tonight with criminally cool rock outfit People’s Temple and local guitar experiment Forget the Times.

Tickets are $8 at the door. Show starts at 10 pm, 18+.

12/13 – Duke & the Loose Cannons @ The Strutt! FREE SHOW!

Craig, Nameless Hippie, and Duke circa 70's

This Monday night, the Strutt welcomes the funky freak jazz of Duke & the Loose Cannons. Think early Zappa meets Sly Stone meets Coltrane meets… you get the picture. The band features some wild players, including members of Wooden Nickel and Kalamazoo legends the Sherman Shultz Food Band, as well as local musical monster Saxsquatch. They don’t call them the Loose Cannons for nothing; get ready to get silly.

No cover for this one. Free live music from 8-11!

12/10 – Shores, Jen Gloeckner, Fiona Dickinson @ Fletcher Collective

This friday, Fletcher Collective hosts No Idea Record’s Shores. This is slowcore at it’s best: thick, clear, warm and cleansing. Fiona Dickinson and Jen Gloeckner will bring the haunt and fire.
