Stella from Athens,OH are coming up to Kalamazoo on their summer tour. With members from Kalamazoo favorites, Frankie Teardrop, Stella play a spastic, angular, technical style of noise rock. At first listen, it reminds me of a mixture between the less grindy parts of Daughters and the kookiness of The Talking Heads. Very stoked to see these folks shred!

If you’re looking for a real chill time, Vermillion Father is your cup of tea! I enjoy listening to VF most while I’m taking a nap, doing the dishes, hitting the bong or filing my taxes. Vermillion Father consists of one person, Jon Sacha aka Jon Bassman and it is his first live show! For fans of getting both your eyebrows pierced.

And last but not least are local improve noise heroes/Coheed & Cambria enthusiasts, Forget The Times. Will it sound beautiful and triumphant, noisey and chaotic or just down right funky? You’re gonna have to come to the show to find out.

Show starts at 9 PM. Bring donations for the touring bands and money for merch/records. No jerks / No booze, All Ages!

July 14th @ Touchdown City: Alta(WI), Arizona Wilder(WI), Lost In Translation and Anybody But The Cops

I’m sure a lot of you have been pretty overwhelmed by the amount of awesome shows going on in Kalamazoo this week but its only going to keep getting better! In my time spent playing in bands, Milwaukee has always had some of the dopest of bands and people. This Saturday, two of the dopest are coming to Kalamazoo, Alta and Arizona Wilder. I’ve heard nothing but great things about these two and Justin from Alta is one of the nicest, most helpful people I’ve ever met. Both bands have that great midwest post hardcore sound and I’m very excited to finally see both.

Local bands will be Lost In Translation who play some very chilled out math rock much like Sharks Keep Moving or Don Cabellero. The other local will be Anybody But The Cops, think of a jazzy Fugazi. Show starts at 8 PM. Respect the house and donate to the touring bands!

Royal Baths, Pessoa and Inflatable Best Friend @ The Strutt on Friday

Summer is almost over and once again The Strutt is putting on a banger of a show or should I say a smanger of a show which of course means it will be a smash and a banger…

Royal Baths hails from San Francisco, CA. They will be jamming their poppy garage rock tunes at the Strutt along with Pessoa from Indianapolis,IN. I got to see Pessoa play in Indy once when my band played with them and it was a killer show. If you are into catchy twinkly jams, you should check them out.

Local rebellious garage rockers, Inflatable Best Friend will be playing as well.  Doors at 8:30, Show starts at 9:30. $5 at the door. If you do dat facebook thing, check it out here. Stay baggy.

SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY Empire! Empire!, Mountains For Clouds, An Aesthetic Anaesthetic and Analecta @ The Strutt

Get your butt off the couch, stop watching dumb football and get down to the Strutt this Sunday for some rad post rock and emo jamz. Empire! Empire! and Mountains For Clouds are stopping in Kalamazoo on their August tour to meet up with An Aesthetic Anaesthetic from Chicago and local gig stars Analecta.

Empire! Empire! comes from Fenton,MI and play twinkly emo in the vein of Mineral and American Football. With their always revolving cast of band members, Keith and Cathy continue to crank out releases and tour frequently. The happy couple runs a record label called Count Your Lucky Stars out of their home and help many bands in the midwest and all over put out cool releases as well. Mountains For Clouds, who also come from the east side of the mitten, play twinkly jams as well but with a more post rock kinda twist. They remind me a lot of a mathy Appleseed Cast if that tickles your fancy at all.

Also joining the fun is An Aesthetic Anaesthetic from Chicago,IL with their raw post rock sounds. And finally some what local boys, Analecta, will be playing epic post rock that will give you the pee pee shakes. I’ve known and watched these guys play in a handful of different kinds of bands and every time I see them live, it gets me more excited for what these guys are gonna put out next.

Doors at 8:00 and show at 9:00. $5 dollars and all ages. Couldn’t ask for a better Sunday gig. Here is that Facebook thang too.

08/02-Spelling Bee(MO), Nightlights(FL), Bike Tuff and The Reptilian at The KFC Castle

House venues come and go in Kalamazoo very often and it is awesome when a new place gets started up. This Tuesday the newest addition to the Kalamazoo house show circuit, The KFC Castle, will be having its first show!

Spelling Bee is a spazzy post-punk duo from St. Louis, MO. They are some friendly people that play very loud and noisy jams in the realm of Lightning Bolt.

And from the other side of the country, Nightlights from Florida will be bringing their catchy pop punk tunes to Kalamazoo.

Bike Tuff and The Reptilian will be tagging along as the local acts. Bring donations for touring bands. If you got beers, you got bucks. Show will start at 8 and be respectful of the crib. Check out the Facebook Event thang!

07/11 We Were Skeletons, Caution Children, The Reptilian, Jowls and My Fictions @ The Strutt

Three touring bands from all over the US are coming to the Strutt this Monday night. We Were Skeletons hails from Lancaster,PA and plays some very intense technical screamo jamz. I have been listening to their full length for a bit and every time I give it a listen, it sounds fresh and new. The song structures remind me a lot of Hot Cross but with the technicality of Capsule. They have released a 7″ split with MNWA and The Saddest Landscape and a 12″ with Topshelf Records. Buy it here or give it a listen here.

On tour with We Were Skeletons is Caution Children from Florida. The play a mix of post rock and screamo. It reminds me a lot of Men As Trees, if anyone remembers them from playing at 902 Davis a couple of times, in the way they had very melodic ambient riffs while having a very shaky rough scream over the top. Also on the bill is My Fictions from Massachusetts. These dudes are all about epic post hardcore in the vein of Touche Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth and Caravels.

My favorite boys from Grand Rapids, Jowls, are also coming down to the Strutt on Monday. They are a powerful screamo two piece that will melt your brain. Recently they got signed to Doghouse Records and will be putting out a full length in the fall. My band(The Reptilian) will be putting out a split with them in the fall as well. They just recorded the tracks for it and here is a little teaser:

And finally my dinguz punk band, The Reptilian will be playing as well.

Show starts at 8 PM

$5

If you do the Facebook thang, here is a link to the event.
