9/18 – King Median, #timdoesnotexist, Shark Attacks Baby @ Satellite Records

image

Satellite Records has only been open for about three months, but in that short amount of time, the neighborhood record store has hosted an already countless number of shows.  This Thursday, King Median and #timdoesnotexist make their respective second visits to Satellite Records joined by a new Kalamazoo project entitled Shark Attacks Baby.

King Median is a psychedelic pop/rock outfit comprised of Kalamazoo College students who just finished recording an album with Kalamazoo-based recording studio / music collective Double Phelix.  King Median was very likely the last artist to record at the now deserted Double Phelix recording facility on Kalamazoo Ave.  The band takes influence from classic and modern psychedelic music, citing such influences as Animal Collective and The Beach Boys.

#timdoesnotexist is the singer-songwriter project of a Kalamazoo musician named Tim Tapper.  Tim has been known as a songwriter in Kalamazoo since moving to the area in 2007, playing songs under varying monikers (The Number Eight, Tim Tapper & the Terribles) over the years.  Distinctions from the projects previous are few and far between, but with #timdoesnotexist, elements of comedy and conceptual songwriting that were not previously present are revealed.

Shark Attacks Baby is a new Kalamazoo band.  The world wide web offers no information on this band, but with a name like that, one can only assume they’ll bring an interesting time.

Satellite Records is an all ages, substance-free venue located at 808 S Westnedge Ave.  The show will kick off around 8:30, and there is no cover charge.

1/29 – Tiny Moving Parts, The Reptilian, Running Shoes, and The Great American Witch Hunt @ Milhouse

Image
This Tuesday, Milhouse host a handful of sincere, loud bands in their basement.

Tiny Moving Parts from Minnesota is coming back through and providing upbeat, 90’s emo influenced songs.  In support are The Great American Witch Hunt and Running Shoes from Grand Rapids, as well as The Reptilian from Kalamazoo.

The Great American Witch Hunt is a doomy, heartfelt 2-piece led by Monte from Mountain Goat and Cult of Reason.  Running Shoes is a new band that is mostly instrumental and reminiscent of American Football.  Closing out the night will be Kalamazoo’s favorite The Reptilian, so don’t get sick and lose your voice or you won’t be able sing along.

The show starts at 9:00pm and donations will be accepted for the out-of-town bands.  As always, come planning to be respectful to all.

1/9 Kalamazoo Free School presents: Live Sound, Acoustics and You with DIT(K)

Image

This Wednesday, DIT Kalamazoo will be hosting a Kalamazoo Free School workshop focused on live sound and acoustics.  The workshop is intended to share skills in mixing, equalizing, and leveling on the PA, but will also touch on sound-proofing and other aspects of live audio.

Local sound/recording engineer Mark Larmee will be facilitating the workshop and can be contacted at marklar.recordings@gmail.com with any questions, contributions, or follow-up.  The event will take place at 926 Davis St in Kalamazoo, begins at 8:30pm, and is (of course) free and open to the public.  You can connect with the Facebook event here.

Kalamazoo Free School is a group of individuals dedicated to sharing useful skills and knowledge in an accessible manner.  For more information on Kalamazoo Free School and a list of KFS events, feel free to visit the WordPress page.

TONIGHT – Nervous Passenger, Forget the Times, Johhny Foreigner, Jake Simmons & the Little Ghosts @ Milhouse

Nine o’clock tonight at Milhouse, two traveling groups and two local favorites will bring sounds to one of the Kalamazoo underground music community’s favorite basements.

Image

Johnny Foreigner, coming in all the way from the UK, is an energetic four-piece pop punk outfit with some experimental leanings.  They’re hitting up the east coast, as well as the midwest on this tour.

Swerp Records labelmates Nervous Passenger are out with JF.  They provide the type of throaty pop punk commonly brought to the Vine Neighborhood by Fat Guy House.  They describe themselves and their music by saying “…songs are about girls and/or friends and/or beer, and they’re super fun to sing along to.”

Local support for the night comes from experimental/noise rock favorites Forget The Times, as well as left-wing anthem singers/Ted Leo fanatics Jake Simmons & the Little Ghosts.  Donations will be accepted and are encouraged for the traveling bands.  Attendees should plan for a fun night, but also to be respectful of the space, the others attending, and the people organizing/helping out with/playing the show.

Tomorrow: Lost In Translation, Eskimeaux, Chanical Fields, Birdfingers @ Corner Record Shop

Tomorrow night, the latest installment in a recent series of shows at the Corner Record Shop features three Kalamazoo artists, as well as a band on tour from Philadelphia.

Lost In Translation is a three-piece progressive/instrumental outfit that plays in town quite a bit.  If you haven’t caught them yet, come prepared for technical, but contained compositions.

Eskimeaux, who you might have caught opening the first Already Dead Family Reunion After Party at Milhouse last month, features members of Br’er, who also played a set during the ADFR.  This airy, verbed-out duo is led by the songwriting and vocals of Gabby Smith.

Chanical Fields is a young pop-punk group from the Kalamazoo area.  This is their first time playing a DIT(k) promoted event.

Birdfingers will be performing solo at this event.  If you aren’t familiar, this is Bennett Young’s songwriting project, who is part of the Double Phelix collective.  Expect deep-voiced, Americana tunes eerily reminiscent of Bill Callahan.

The Corner Record Shop is located at 1710 West Main in Kalamazoo.  The show starts at 9:00pm.  Don’t forget to bring money, as there will be donations accepted for Eskimeaux’s gas tank and records at the store that you will want to purchase!

Already Dead Family Reunion Preview: About A Million

One of many artists performing the opening evening of the AD Family Reunion tomorrow is rural Pennsylvania’s own About A Million.  The band currently consists of two permanent members, Anthony and Jess (who just announced their engagement to marry this week, so don’t forget to congratulate them!), but live sets close to home also consist of other family members and friends, as seen in the video below.

AAM began as Anthony’s songwriting project when he started recording his own music as a teenager.  The project is very versatile in sound.  Releases over the years have had seamless transitions between twee, hip hop, indie rock, math rock, and folk sounds.  Currently, About A Million is a little more grounded to the indie and folk elements of their sound, as evident on their two most recently recorded releases, Things We Don’t Think About and Me + You.

About A Million is playing the AD Family Reunion tomorrow night (Thursday).  Night one is at the No Fun House and starts at six.  The suggested donation (for this night only) is $4, or you can get a pass for the whole weekend here.  More information about the Already Dead Family Reunion is available on the Facebook event.

8/4 – Circle, Get Square! – Walter Mitty & His Makeshift Orchestra – Jake Simmons

Tomorrow night, for the first time in a couple of months, Milhouse will host a quiet show in their living room, featuring three songwriters, one with a four-piece acoustic band.

Image

Walter Mitty & His Makeshift Orchestra are coming through all the way from Portland on a month and a half tour that winds through most all the inhabited parts of the US and they are bringing upbeat songs about real life along with them. Their most current album, Overwhelmed & Underdressed, is full of beautiful, honest lyrics with subject matter that can be both socially relevant and personal, accompanied by acoustic string instruments, tambourines, and hand drums.

Local support will be provided by Jake Simmons, who will be performing solo for the first time in a while, after a long while of full band sets with JS & the Little Ghosts.  Jake Simmons writes songs about world problems that are influenced by power-poppers like Elvis Costello and Ted Leo.

Circle, Get Square! is the long-standing songwriting project of a musician named Travis who grew up in the Kalamazoo area and has been living in Chicago for the past year.  He’ll be returning to play a set at this show, offering up clever and sincere songs that echo anti-folk and lo-fi pop musicians such as The Moldy Peaches or David Dondero.

Door time is 8:00pm and donations will be accepted for Walter & co.  Come support some traveling musicians and have a good time!  No tom-foolery will be tolerated.

Tomorrow (7/11) – Tiny Moving Parts, That’s Blood, George Costanza @ the Crystal Cavern

Tomorrow night, Kalamazoo basement venue the Crystal Cavern will rival the fun it offered last weekend when M Sord, Batcave, and others graced it’s cement floor.

Tiny Moving Parts describes themselves as “Minnesota kids who have nothing better to do.”  This music video pretty much sums them up, but expect fun-time chime guitar riffs and a whole lot of shouting.

That’s Blood is four guys who grew up making music together in neighboring Kalamazoo city, Portage.  Once known as Sea Rex, That’s Blood writes technical and heavy songs influenced by post-hardcore of the early 2000s, a la The Fall of Troy.  They’ve been playing basements around Kalamazoo fairly often, and the above video is of a show they played at Victory house some months back.

George Costanza will be performing as well.  We’ve mentioned George in a lot of recent posts, so we’ll skip the description this time to avoid redundancy, but what can be said is that they will be performing with known Kalamazoo musician Alex Young on drums until Chris gets back from his film internship in California.

The show starts at 9pm and Tiny Moving Parts has a gas tank will thank you for donating!

TONIGHT – No Fun House presents Emilio Festivez 3.0 with Alex/Marcus Quinlan, Cold Mountain Child, Sea Couch and Birdfingers

Come down to No Fun House around 5pm if you’re hungry and want to participate in the potluck/cookout, stay all night for music, which starts around 8pm.  Emilio Festivez is No Fun House’s annual festival, featuring low volume bands, Estevez movies, and veggie burgers.

Image

Alex and Marcus Quinlan are brothers from Battle Creek.  This will be their first performance together.  Alex has laid down some very thoughtful, reputable folk songs since the demise of both The Almanac Shouters and Rotten Wood Moon.

Sea Couch is a husband and wife duo from Baltimore that has an eerie, haunting aesthetic to their conceptual folk songs.  Their instrumentation includes dual vocal, banjo, and acoustic guitar.  Maryland isn’t close, so make sure to bring some donations, or at least some kind words for the couple of folkies.

Birdfingers is the songwriting project of Kalamazoo musician Bennett Young.    Bennett has been known to perform both solo and with a full band, both of which are captivating set-ups.  His music is bright and uplifting.  It’s a tad folky, but modern and unique.

Lastly, a group that I’d have an awfully hard time writing an unbiased preview of, seeing as they might be the most important band in Kalamazoo to me, is Cold Mountain Child.  CMC have been sharing their earthy, but spacey low volume soundscapes with K-zoo show-goers for years now.  This past year, CMC upgraded from being a duo to being a full (but still quiet) band, including trap-kit drums, bass, violin, two acoustic guitars, electric guitar, keys and harmonizing vocals.  Cold Mountain Child will soothe you and encourage you to think, while also creating an ethereal wall of sound.

The Almanac Shouters / Lincoln County War / George Costanza @ The Ant Hill 5.25

This Friday, a show that needs no introduction.

Local living room legends The Almanac Shouters are calling off their hiatus for one night only. Nola, a founding member of the group, plans to move from town at the end of this month. The Shouters haven’t said it will be their final reunion show, but it very well could be. If you haven’t yet had the pleasure of catching their incredible, energetic live show in the past, treat yourself and make it out to this show.

George Costanza, who will be kicking off their first tour at this show, was just a featured artist in a recent DITKalamazoo post, therefore needs no further description, but here’s a video (thanks to neobeatglory for the footage).

Lincoln County War will also be folking up the night with great stories and belted vocals. Here’s some footage of them performing at Victory House, courtesy of alexgilbert247.

This event is being hosted at The Ant Hill in the Vine Street Neighborhood this Friday and begins at 9:00pm. For more information, you can consult the Facebook event page.
