Cold Mountain Child

Ease your mind off of the dreaded finals week and put an end to your semester in style, this Friday (4/19), at HullabaTWO!–a back-to-back folk-musical extravaganza. Featured will be Kalamazoo’s very own Cold Mountain Child and Lincoln County War. This special event will take place downstairs at the Peace Center on WMU main campus. Of local origin, Cold Mountain Child is characterized by its soothing male vocals and ambient guitar sounds, while Lincoln County War features a guitar-violin duo matched with aggressive vocals reminiscent of Jeff Mangum or Tom Waits. Lincoln County War will start the night off tentatively at 6:00pm. Be sure to bring some extra cash for our talented friends.

Give ’em a listen below!

4/17 – Foxmoulder, Coma Regalia, NOHEALTH @ Wayne Manor

foxmoulderTonight’s lineup at Wayne Manor consists of a few of the hardest hitting post-hardcore acts in North America.
Toronto’s Foxmoulder plays dark, heavy and emotional music that is almost impossible not to head bang along to.

Coma Regalia is an intense two-piece hailing from Indiana that you certainly don’t want to miss if you are into powerful tunes.

Two Kzoo favorites, The Reptilian and Natural Disasters, are hitting the road for an intense, non-stop tour of the mid-west and east coast.  So, it is only fitting that we send them off in style – rockin’ basement show style that is.  This Friday (4/5) at The Courthouse they will be joined by Nohealth (post-hardcore from Cleveland, OH) and Locktender (progressive hardcore from GR) to kick the tour off!  The doors open at nine, show will start shortly thereafter.  Bring a few bucks for the touring acts and don’t forget to RESPECT the bands, the house, and, of course, each other.

I’m sure many of you know the bands, but if you don’t, check out the links below.  They are sure to convince you.

Ghost Mice of Plan-it-X Return To Kalamazoo at Full House (2.0) 3/24/13

ghostmice

Ghost Mice playing in Kalamazoo almost exactly 5 years ago at Rocketstar Cafe. Photo by Jes Kramer.

It’s been almost four years since the acoustic duo Ghost Mice (featuring Chris Clavin, co-founder of the almost 20 years standing record label Plan-it-X) have been in Kalamazoo Michigan. Not too long after that tour, Ghost Mice called a hiatus, mostly due to fiddle player Hannah having a kiddo. Chris did several solo tours since then, a couple of which he ended up playing wonderful shows in Kalamazoo. However, they’re back as the original band and they’ve got a new album  “All We’ve Got Is Eachother,” with a fuller sound than previous, and they are just as sweet of folks as they’ve ever been.

Speaking of new albums, also on the bill for this show is local guitar and violin duo Lincoln County War, who will be releasing their first ever recordings at this show! Though LCW has been playing locally for roughly three years, the only recorded material of theirs can be found mostly on dodgy youtube videos, so come to this show to purchase at a super affordable price, properly recorded versions of these songs. Though the set up for LCW and Ghost Mice are similar, the sound is much different. Although they could both be classified as “folk punk,” Lincoln County features an angrier, harsher tone, more akin with Andrew Jackson Jihad, or if Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads were stripped down.

Long-time Kalamazoo underground composer Travis of Circle, Get Square will also be performing. Whether Travis is currently living in Kalamazoo or anywhere else, if he is performing in Kalamazoo, he is treated and appreciated like a dear local. Stylistically shifting from lo-fi keyboard pop tunes to full, melancholic folk songs, Circle, Get Square is a dynamic project that if you haven’t yet seen, you’re definitely not going to want to miss.

Finally, Arms Akimbo will also be performing to round out this acoustic endeavor. Though this project is the newest locally, Topher, the singer/songwriter of this one man project, has been writing and performing for many years, and for several different musical stylings. Here you will find introspective folk songs, fitting perfectly into the mix of this show.

You can see excellent samples of all three locals by browing through http://www.DITsessions.com

This show will start at 7PM on Sunday the 24th, and is the first show at this location! If you don’t know where it is, shoot an email to DIT. Please bring donations for the touring group (or even some dollars for merch), and please respect the household.

3-13-13 BLUES CONTROL / BROWN COMPANY / KYLE LANDSTRA @ 411 CLUB

The 411 Club has a special event on the way for those with an appreciation for the abstract.

The great BLUES CONTROL is coming to town! I’ve been listening to this band for a few years now and have been wanting to book them just as long.

Blues Control (Drag City Records) is a modern Synthesizer & Guitar Duo with a unique sound. There are many different influences and genres blending together in a way I’ve never heard elsewhere. Listen closely and you can pick up on ambient textures, folk whispers, noise drones, jazz riffs and sometimes even the blues. Sounds flow effortlessly and are best thought of as a film soundtrack. Just sit back and let the waves take you far away…

WearWolf is a one-man band of Satanic Synthesizer music, guaranteed to damn you to electronic hell. Take a listen:

A lot of rap acts are described as in your face, but The Wrap, and his backing crew The New Mutantz will get so close you’ll accidentally eskimo kiss them.

The fun starts at 10:05pm and of course it is free!

New York Hip Hop, Lo-Fi Pop and Kzoo Punk at Louie’s on Thursday, March 7th!

A quad of performances are lined up to satiate your skull on Thursday, March 7th at Louie’s Trophy House in Kalamazoo, Michigan starting around 8:30 p.m.

From New York, Phone Home provide some thumping bedroom beats that transfer to the stage with great ease.  Should get some booties shaking

Newport Stress also hail from New York and bring some old school-style raw hip hop

Former Tenants are punk as fuck and right outta Kalamazoo

The fourth band is The Pate Smith Project, of which is a complete mystery to DIT, all the more exciting!

Doors are at 8:30 p.m. with the show starting a little after 9 p.m. at Louie’s Trophy House and Grill on 440 E. North Street just northeast of downtown Kalamazoo.  The age range is 18 and up, and while entry is free, it is suggested to donate to a little scratch to help out the touring bands.  Gas prices are a wee bit steep these days.

Happy Happy Birthday Party: Danger Groove, Boron Nuzzle, Matt Black, and Wearwolf @ the Black Lodge on March 1st.

You know what’s better than a birthday party? A birthday dance party.

The Black Lodge is celebrating the new month, and a birthday, with plenty of music to groove to.

Starting at 9 pm, Danger Groove is going to spin his vinyl DJ-set, and play electronic dance music.

Matt Black, a native Kalamazoo artist, will be rapping off his old and new songs. He’ll be giving us a taste of his upcoming release “Oak Street Market.”

Then Boron Nuzzle will play experimental funk-tions, bringing keyboards, guitar, and a sax to the party.

Come on down to the Black Lodge, bring a few dollars for donations, and come see the birthday boy Andy Argo for a night full of very danceable music.

Be respectful, stay respectable.

Sugar Baron, Seven Birds One Stone, and Decades at the Courthouse Saturday March 2 2013

Catchy beats for free at the Courthouse this Saturday!

Sugar Baron

Sugar Baron

Sugar Baron bring their driving guitars, tidy electronic beats, and lilting soft vocals from Detroit to share with all their Kalamazooan friends. Just take a listen to “Self Saboteur” and imagine how fun this show will be!

Seven Birds One Stone

Seven Birds One Stone

Seven Birds One Stone (also of Detroit) bring a more organic, slightly funkier brand of rock. Male/female vocal duets, a full rhythm section, and syncopated rhythm guitars guarantee finger wagging and hip shaking.

Decades

Decades

Decades have come from Lansing with a van-full of Power Pop, and they’re a welcome reminder of how the great 90’s still are. Punchy guitar-oriented rock songs with layers of strong male vocals and purposeful guitar feedback may remind you of the Gin Blossoms, while the scream-sung choruses evoke the earlier works of the Foo Fighters.

8pm doors, 9pm music, bring some bucks for the touring bands if you can. RSVP at the Facebook event page.
