6/6 – UK Guitar Hero to play The Strutt

This is a relatively exciting post for me personally, so I’m just going to get all the way down to business: Michael Chapman is a 70 year old man from the United Kingdom, over by way of Europe. he is also a brilliant musician and phenomenal guitar player. He is also playing The Strutt tomorrow here in Kalamazoo.

This is going to be an excellent show just in regards to Mr. Chapman. But in case that wasn’t enough, Kalamazoo locals Lincoln County War will be providing support. In case that’s still not enough, Matt Motzell – the drummer for local rockers Coma Nova – will also be performing a solo set, and his first solo set in a very long time.

It should be a night of excellent music, and for a mere pittance of $5 at the door, what more do you want on a Monday Night?

Music should start around 8:30, so get ready to rock right around then!

5/28 – Them Crooked Folkies at the Strutt tonight, Them Crooked Bluesies at the Bells, too.

You like folk music? You like Rock music? You like when the two are recklessly smashed together and performed on stage in front of a live studio audience? Well that’s what’s going to happen tonight at The Strutt, and that’s pretty cool.

Coming in all the way from New York, former University Of Michigan student Charlene Kaye is on tour and playin’ the house.  Her music is less folk-rock and more folk-jazz – not that she doesn’t rock per se, just that she be swingin’, and that’s okay. She’s got a set of pipes too, which further aids in the process of getting down.

Spencer Michaud hails from Ann Arbor currently, and is a bit more straight-laced in terms of his folk music. It’s good though, real good.

Finally, local Folk Rock Heroes Birches are providing the jams, the grooves, and the hometown support. This is one of my personal favorite Kalamazoo outfits, and it’s always good to see ’em playing at home. The doors for this one open at 8:30 and it cost 5 bux to stop by, but don’t let that deter you from some awesome music.

If a funkier, bluesier sort of night is what you’re looking for, though, you could always swing by Bell’s Eccentric Cafe and check out the BMF Band and Marble Garden. It’s gonna be good times either way though!

Sweet Brown/Brown Cow/IfIHadAHiFi

Tonight at Louie’s Trophy House Grill, Sweet Brown bring the fun times in the form of several girls and a male or two. I saw them play on an ill-fated night where winter road conditions rendered a show incomplete yet they still brought a few fun originals and a high octane set of covers from the Runaways and Blondie.

Brown Cow are a young group of musicians geared toward the slacker pop of the 90s like Pavement and Sebadoh, with singer Mallory Cobb’s otherworldly vocal vibrato filling out the sound in a new flavor to this formula.

IfIHadAHiFi hail from Milwaukee and feature members of Death Dream and The Pop Machine. They bring Noise Rock and Post-Punk like crazy, a party of excess. WAY FUN!

The show is only $5 and starts at 10 p.m. at 440 E. North St in Kalamazoo, MIchigan. Louie’s Trophy Grill House!

5/25 -TV Ghost, Spittin’ With The Spits and other exciting tales!

Every once in a while, the garage-rockers leave the garage and rock elsewhere. Sometimes that elsewhere is a long, long way from home. That’s what TV Ghost is doing this Wednesday at Louie’s Trophy House Grille, and it is so good to hear it. Their special brand of music is crunchy, punky, relatively manic and mildly insane. I caught these guys last time they came through the ‘Zoo (even had a chance to open for them) and they are most excellent. But don’t take my word for it, come check it out tomorrow night!

Joining them will be The Spits, formerly-local rockers with a synthesized twinge that gets the hairs on the back of your neck standing up just right. These fellas know how to pound through a tune and make it count. Check ’em!

Finally, Kalamazoo locals No Bails will provide the hometown support. Zombie Surf music at it’s finest!

Show starts at 9 and it costs 5 bux to get in, but what price do you put on good old Rock and Roll? See you cats there!

5/21 – Rockin’ And Rollin’ All Up In!

Tonight there’s a whole lot of rockin’ and rollin’ and jazzin’ and such goin’ on all over the place, and it will be so good to hear it.

First up, The psychedelic jam-band stylings of Marble Garden can be found tonight at Papa Pete’s. They’re loud, funky, groovy, and most importantly, these boys can play! Also, before you ask, their band name is in fact a reference to a level in Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Oh, and there’s the band too:

Plus, Teh Wallcatz will be opening up with their own brand of funky sweaty organ trio goodness. The jams will be had for certain. Show costs 4 bucks to get in.

If jazz is what you want, however, you can always pop by The Strutt and check out Duke and the Loose Cannons! Featuring Leonard Duke and Craig Vestel – long time Kalamazoo Musicians – James Duke of Son Drop, and Jarad ‘Saxsquatch’ Selner (That’s me!). We will get down. Let’s KICK IT.

5/20 – Blueprint, Bedroxx, Shneal at The Strutt

Tonight, you, The Strutt, Blueprint from Rhymesayers, Bedroxx, and Shneal (both local cats); high quality Hip-Hop.

Bring $10 dollars and one of these things because it’s gonna be sick.

Face Mask

5/19 – Fairweather Friends/Evil Deauxerz/MattMattPete at Louie’s TONIGHT

BlackJack Productions would like to present: The melodic garage-psych onslaught known as Fairweather Friends out of Milwaukee, WI shall be appearing tonight at Louie’s Trophy House Grill in downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan!

Frontman Jordan Davis was formerly in the Wisconsin outfit Mystery Girls.  Much like that band, the Friends bring that amped up 60s psych flavor with strong songwriting to boot.  There’s perhaps even more melodic focus but the rockin’ is still intact, as evidenced by the song “Jokes On You“.

Kalamazoo’s The Evil Deauxerz are set to tear down the house with their rambunctious garage stomp that echoes through the Valley.

Lastly, a new project has recently been given life by members of outfits such as The Philly Crawlers, Aaron Young & His Nights Jars, Legendary Wings, and former Tiny Rhythm-ers.  As of right now, the project is simply known as MattMattPete and is in its infancy, so anything could happen!  The music is fairly diverse, with a heavy emphasis on drone and vamp rock!

Louie’s Trophy House Grill is located at 44o E. North Street in Kalamazoo, Michigan.  The show is 18 and up, starts 10 p.m., and costs ya $5 bones!

5/18 – Seth Bernard returns to The Strutt!

Courtesy Earthwork Music http://earthworkmusic.com

Tonight, The Strutt plays host to the Kalamazoo return of Seth Bernard! In the off-case that you have not heard Seth before, he plays good, wholesome folk-inspired tunes sometimes, and then totally shreds an electric guitar other times. He also puts on a hell of a show, and so this one comes with a high recommendation.

For reference, here’s Seth performing a Pink Floyd tune with Daisy May:

Yeah, you know you like it.

Tonight, Seth will be backed up by a few of his friends, including Dominic Davis, Josh Davis, and Mike Shimmin. The music starts at 9pm, the cost of admission is $10, and the tunes will be kicking, to be absolutely sure!

Open Mic tonight!

Well, it’s Tuesday in Kalamazoo. That means the Strutt’s microphones are unprotected! You play music? Come on down and grab a 15-minute slot for which to get down in. You like listening to music? Come on down and enjoy drink and the widest variety of tuneage this side of the Mason-Dixon.

If you’re planning on performing, keep this in mind: The Strutt offers for your use a full backline including drum set, guitar, bass guitar and amplifier. It can also accommodate everything from acoustic instruments, acoustic instruments with pickups, horns, and of course vocals.

Now going to a jam session or open mic has some unwritten rules that sometimes are not always made obvious to participants and audience members, so I’ll lay a few down right here. First off, if you’re playing, set up and tear down quickly so that you can play a full set and so you don’t cut in to anyone else’s time. Also, try not to show up right before your set and leave right before your set. it’s rather inconsiderate of the other people who have come to play and listened to you.

Also (and this is one of those old fashioned golden rules anyway), be respectful to the other acts. You may be a salty veteran of the open stage and microphone format, but a lot of the players hitting open mics don’t have any experience or are just getting started. Say a few kind words and show some encouragement, you were there once too.

That being said, it’s important that everyone has a good time, so come on down and do it!

Sign up sheet comes out promptly at 6:50 and fills up quick, so get your tails on down asap!
