Come see 6 sweet bands for only $5. That’s less than a dollar per band! And 4 of these bands are from out of town so they need you to come to this show and help make it a good one so we can keep having awesome out-of-town bands make Kalamazoo a destination.
Here’s a little preview of tonight:
edhochuli from Pittsburgh – weighty gnarly riffs & roars
Greyscale from Memphis – post hardcore screamo
Calculator from Los Angeles – post hardcore screamo
Seventeen Again from Kalamazoo – metal punks
Bill Tucker from Chicago – Noise
Forget the Times from Kalamazoo – Noise Rock
Just a fair warning, shows at The 411 have been starting ON THE DOT, so be sure to get there right at 9:00 pm so you don’t miss anything!
More often than not, I catch myself thinking, “Gee, I haven’t been to Louie’s in a while, I wonder why that is.” I mean, the place has everything; food, drink, billiards, taxidermy, and this Saturday night, Louie’s Trophy House and Grill is playing host to some of our fine local talent, as well as some welcome faces from out of town.
From the sprawling grassy ocean of Ohio, STRANGEWAVE make mountains of musical molehills with a deep melancholy sound http://strangewave.bandcamp.com/
Nobody in town has a bad word to breathe about BORING PEOPLE, certainly not the band, anyway. Don’t you dare let the name fool you. http://boringpeople.bandcamp.com/
Rounding out the sound for the evening, is none other than SAXSQUATCH AND THE BRIDGE BAND, Kalamazoo’s premier keister-haulin groove train, here to set your souls on fire. Or is it soles? Whichever analogy makes you wanna dance.
The gig is set to take off around 8:30, suggesting a donation of $5 if you please. 18+
Leave some room in your gut for a beer and bring your dancin’ shoes, just in case.
The Reptilian and Alta are touring for like a billion years and then coming back to Kalamazoo to play a show at The Courthouse! Show starts at 8 PM//$3-$5 for touring bands//be respectful of each other and the house!
ALTA(Milwaukee,WI): http://alta.bandcamp.com Raw and emotional, Alta brings an interesting twist to the skramz genre. Layered and beautifully flowing, this is a band not to be missed. If you like The Rep, you’ll find something to love in this.
AU REVOIR(NJ): http://aurevoirit.bandcamp.com/ With a textural and sonically massive sound, Au Revoir do post rock very well. Beautiful melodies and wandering soundscapes. FFO Caspian and If These Trees Could Talk
THE REPTILIAN: http://thereptilianband.bandcamp.com/ You know them and love them. They’re back from their tour with Alta, and promise to bring a high energy performance.
ANYBODY BUT THE COPS Spazztastic, in your face punk! Hailing from Kalamazoo, they have a sound and emotion all their own, without having to say a word.
Folk music is a distantly-permeating phenomenon that spans continents and centuries. Here in the US, we get a great deal of influence from traditions across the pond. Well, some of that tradition is visiting us here in the Zoo tonight, and Representing Drag City Records while he does.
ALASDAIR ROBERTSWill finger-pick the sauce out of a six-string while he sings songs that are deep, regal, and charming all at once. His voice is strong but not over-bearing, his accent ever-present without being distracting. ‘Swonderful.
Supporting this bill tonight, Double Phelix recording artist FIONA DICKINSONwill be playing her own brand of folk-infused music. Sweeping and swelling musical colors cushion a soulful and emotive voice. A Kalamazoo favorite.

Finally, one of my personal favorite acts that this city has to offer, ALEX QUINLAN will be pickin’ and a-grinin’. His bass-baritone is gritty, yet soothing all at once. He sings songs about post-industrialism and sentimentality (and occasionally a Grieg quote or two). Again with the finger-style six-string, though in an entirely different way from Alasdair. Hopefully his brother Marcus and his upright bass can make it, too.
The music starts tonight at 8pm at the 411 Club (411 N. Westnedge, Kalamazoo, attached the Metro). The door is 5 bucks, but all that scratch goes to Alasdair. Unfortunately, this particular gig is 18+ (sorry guys).
These shows start at 9 and 830 respectively. DONATE TO THE TOURING BANDS!!! Gas ain’t cheap and they need to get home! Respect the houses, bands, and people around you, and have a good time!!
Pat “The Bunny,” former Vermont turned Arizona based musician has been touring through Kalamazoo for years, under a few different guises. His current songwriting outfit is a large, plugged in, rag-tag group called RAMSHACKLE GLORY, who will be making their second appearance at Milhouse. Ramshackle sings songs about recovery, shelter, and state resistance. Though the subject matter can be heavy, if you’re not dancing, you’re probably missing the point.
On tour with Ramshackle are their buddies from Portland, OR THE TAXPAYERS. The Taxpayers have coined the term goof punk for what they do, and their live performance reflects that wholeheartedly. A band with a higher energy level than these folks would be difficult to find. This will be The Taxpayers first time in Kalamazoo, so show them a warm welcome.
Finally, local support provided by JEREMY RUGGLES & THE DEAD EGOS. Jeremy has been writing strange folk songs for many years in the area, with a myriad of musicians accompanying. The Dead Egos will be yet another large band based out a folk tradition, but definitely choosing to stray far from it.
Show is kicking off at 9:00. BRING DONATIONS FOR THE TOURING BANDS. It is not cheap to move that many people and instruments across the country. Respect the house, the band, the folks around you, yourself, your community.
This weekend at Wayne Manor we’ve got two nights of festivities for you. Kicking it off Friday (7/12), Jake Simmons and the Little Ghost, The Island of Misfit Toys, The Dead Records, and Saxsquatch & Bridge Band will be bring a night of pop-punk, jazz, and rock ‘n’ roll. Saturday night’s (7/13) an off the wall, grindcore extravaganza with Gas up Yr Hearse, Yusuke, Sender Receiver, and Tristram. Check out the links below, Bring a few dollars to help out the touring bands, and respect everyone/everything.
7/12 (will be starting a bit late to accommodate the Millhouse crowd, about 9:30)
Although Milhouse has had a few returning touring acts, Speedy Ortiz will be the first to return three times in just about a years time! Although this act has been getting some attention from major publications, they’re still attempting to run their tour circuit through some favorite DIY spaces – Kalamazoo included.
SPEEDY ORTIZ are on tour to promote their new album, Major Arcana, which came out July 9th. The four piece band has a huge sound, with heavy drums and spiraling/strange guitar lines, all matched with unbeatable catchy hooks.
Also performing will be locals CRASH CITY SAINTS, the local longtime running shoegaze band featuring a changing line up and evolving sound, who first brought Speedy Ortiz to Kalamazoo. SHARK BEACH the brand-spankin’-patent-pending new band featuring a few of those buddies from MINUTES will be playing their first set. And finally, local hit makers and heart breakers BORING PEOPLE will knock your socks off with delightful bummer tracks as they always promise to do.
If you like things loud, weird, and stuck in your head for days, this is the show for you.
Please bring donation for the touring act. Please respect everyone at the house. Be kind, rewind. THIS SHOW IS STARTING EARLY. We’re kicking things off at 7:30! The reason for this is that once this is done, you can get TWICE AS MUCH ROCK by going to Wayne Manor to see Jake Simmons & The Little Ghosts, The Island of Misfit Toys (Chicago, IL), The Dead Records (Fort Wayne, IN), and Saxquatch & The Bridge Band.
