MEHRUNES DAGON INVADES THE BLACK LODGE 2/9!

Mehrunes Dagon is a newer outfit out of Grand Rapids, Michigan. As a sucker for stoner metal I was instantly drawn in by their tunes. This is a band that would go great with Beast In the Field or The Sword. We have the pleasure of having them back to The Black Lodge for another shot at Kalamazoo.

The first Mehrunes Dagon show was an affair to remember. Rarely do we see bands that give off that super authentic vibe. These dudes make heavy slow metal because this is who they are! Give their tunes a listen at the following link…

Joining the ranks of this all star line up we have Reconnect. Reconnect is a hardcore group from Lansing that is comprised of members of Lansing’s banned and burned! Cody howls and plays the guitar with pure unadulterated emotion. Staring off like a wild man into empty space like he wants to explode. Another not to miss act!

Locals on the show include…

Timelapse-Brutal hardcore from Battle Creek.

Fossil Eyes-Members of The now defunct band penguin collector and some new friends have reconvened to give bring us some delightful new tunes. A little more on an indie rock inclination than all of the other bands, but a great addition to the show!

Please donate to the two out of town bands! Come hang!

In Regards to Recent Events

Last week, an attendee at a house show in the Vine Neighborhood was the victim of an unexpected and unprovoked attack. They were struck from behind with a blade, leaving deep cuts across the throat and behind the ear. A regular show-goer and friend to many in the community, they were lucky to make it out of this alive.

The attacker was someone who was not part of this community. While the person who was attacked was known by most attending the basement show that night, there was hardly a soul to be found that even so much as recognized the perpetrator. This heinous act was performed by an outlier, not someone who was representative of or even associated with the music community of Kalamazoo. As far as anyone can tell, the attacker was not even acquainted with the target of his assault. Fortunately enough, he was located and apprehended by the police shortly after fleeing from the house. He is currently awaiting a court hearing, and with any luck, justice will be served.

This attack happened amid a recent increase in violent crimes around the Vine Neighborhood. Multiple people have reported being mugged or assailed on the way to or from shows around town. But this instance was certainly unique among recent happenings in that it happened during a show, in the crowd, while a band was playing.

However, it is important to remember that this is still an isolated event and is by no means characteristic of the safe and open community we work to foster in this city.

It is an unfortunate truth that such dangers are permeating our community and it is imperative that we address it as just that – a community. We are in this together because we love music and we love this town and we by no means want to see anyone threaten what we love.

DIT members have already been discussing how to ensure the safety of our show spaces. For everyone that lives at a house that hosts shows, there are steps that can be taken which may not already be in place:

  • Coordinate with your roommates or friends in order to effectively monitor what is going on during the night.
  • Keep people posted throughout the house and stay in communication.
  • It is always helpful to maintain only one entrance point in order to see who is coming and going.
  • If you don’t know someone who turns up, extend a hand and introduce yourself. Make sure those in attendance know who is running the show and make sure you know who is in your house.
  • If anyone is exhibiting signs of strange behavior or is making you or anybody else uncomfortable, communicate this to others. Never be afraid to address this issue and tell somebody they are no longer welcome. This is your house and what you say goes.
  • Be prepared to take charge of a situation – this is your responsibility as the host of a house show.
  • Know that you are not alone. If you don’t have roommates or others willing to help you run a show, talk to DIT members – generally there will be at least a handful of us at any given show already.

We can all stand to be more attentive in the course of our show-going. Remember that the people you see attending, hosting, and playing shows regularly around here are your friends and your neighbors. Every one of us can play a part in maintaining a positive and inviting atmosphere at our shows, even in the face of this ugliness that has transpired.  But do make sure to watch out for yourself and do your part to watch out for those around you.

We have a thriving culture for DIY underground shows in Kalamazoo. This community is really an amazing, beautiful thing. A tremendous amount of work has been done over the years to not only provide music throughout our city, but to come together and be organized in our actions in a way that is unlike most other cities anywhere else. This is our strength. One incident of violence will not unravel that. We do not accept violence at our shows and we do not promote it any way whatsoever.

1/29 – Tiny Moving Parts, The Reptilian, Running Shoes, and The Great American Witch Hunt @ Milhouse

Image
This Tuesday, Milhouse host a handful of sincere, loud bands in their basement.

Tiny Moving Parts from Minnesota is coming back through and providing upbeat, 90’s emo influenced songs.  In support are The Great American Witch Hunt and Running Shoes from Grand Rapids, as well as The Reptilian from Kalamazoo.

The Great American Witch Hunt is a doomy, heartfelt 2-piece led by Monte from Mountain Goat and Cult of Reason.  Running Shoes is a new band that is mostly instrumental and reminiscent of American Football.  Closing out the night will be Kalamazoo’s favorite The Reptilian, so don’t get sick and lose your voice or you won’t be able sing along.

The show starts at 9:00pm and donations will be accepted for the out-of-town bands.  As always, come planning to be respectful to all.

1/26 – CORNER RECORD SHOP ‘ART FEST’

Seeing as how Corner Record Shop is too far away from downtown to be a part of the monthly Art Hops, they’ve decided to host their own version of it. First one was last month with Brown Company, Forget The Times and Saxsquatch. A pleasant time was had by all.

This month they’re keeping the new tradition alive! Here’s the plan:

The store will be open all day as normal. Register will be open throughout the event as well if ya wanna do some late night shopping.
At 8pm, there will be FREE snacks & refreshments (planning on picking up a few growlers of root beer from Old Peninsula…). Feel free to come hang and enjoy the art.
At 9:30 the music will begin.
There is no cover charge and all ages are welcome.

Zine Workshop TONIGHT!

Have you been interested in DIY publishing, but weren’t sure where to start? Maybe you have a collection of zines and are interested in finding more types or reading some new ones. Perhaps you’ve even made zines in the past, but you are looking to spice things up with some alternative bindings or unique formats?

If you could relate to any of the earlier sentiments, you might find tonight’s Zine Workshop helpful and informative! The latest offering by Kalamazoo Free School, this workshop is being led by our good friend Mira, with a little help from fellow zinesters DeGraw and Lauren.

For the uninitiated, zines are usually self-published booklets that can be in many formats and include a variety of subjects.  They can be instructional, historical, anecdotal, fictional or personal. Some are single page folded and some are intricate, large volumes with hand sewn bindings.

If you head over to Milhouse around 8 PM tonight, you’ll learn more about the history and variety of zines, as well as current zine culture and how people distribute and share their zines. There will also be a hands-on portion where you can practice binding techniques.

As with all Free School events, the workshop is open to people of all interest levels and abilities.  If you feel you have a decent knowledge of zines and would like to contribute to the conversation, your input is welcome. If you would like to bring a current zine project with you, there will be time for you to work on it in a collaborative environment. There will also be a zine library for browsing through.

Inflatable Best Friend Album Release !TONIGHT!@ The Black Lodge

The wait is over! Tonight is the night. Inflatable Best Friend will be releasing their debut album entitled “DMT Bike Ride” on vinyl. The LP will be made available at tonights show at The Black Lodge for a mere $5.

http://inflatablebestfriend1.bandcamp.com/

Joining in on the fun will be……

NO BAILS- What’s not to love? No Bails is one of Kalamazoo’s favorite Garage Punk bands. They pump out some tunes that make me feel like cruising down the street on a skateboard and getting into trouble. They have a 7 inch out on the mysterious “Orgone Toilet” record label.

The Abortion Survivors- The Abortion Survivors are one of Kalamazoo’s resident hardcore punk bands. Furious vocals, pounding drums and ripping guitars.

BLANK- Kalamazoo super group featuring members of Ackley Kid, Witch Fingers, Everyone and Their Empty Cups, Statia and Pan.

The WRAP- Last but not least! It’s been a minute since I have seen The Wrap at a house show. The Wrap will be topping off the night to end the show on a great note! Sounds Brokencyde gone horribly right….

ALL OF THESE BANDS.  9 PM at The Black Lodge.  Starting on time.  So don’t be a wiener and show up 4 hours late.

Clash of the Acronyms: WIDR and KCAC present a Gallery Acoustic show!

What do you get when you cross the Western Inter-Dormitory Radio and the Kalamazoo Collaborative Arts Co-op? You get a sweet little acoustic set at 509 Vine street!

Alex Young will be playing as his solo guitar-and-vocals project A Life of Making Tapes. He also did a set last night at Milhouse, and it was most excellent, so if you missed that, consider this a DO-OVER.

Fiona Dickinson is going to lend her soothing sounds as well. Excellent music, haunting lyrics, powerful voice. A Kalamazoo treasure and personal favorite.

Another favorite of mine, Diamond Wave Press (Of Kalamazoo’s) Cold Mountain Child is fixin’ to swath wave after wave of joyful Appalachian sound. These folk are folk in the truest sense – that is, they play the snot out of folk music. Catch them!

Finally, Aaron Garcia (?) will be down to do his thing.

This is an early one (7pm!), so you can show up and have plenty of time to make it to the Hands Off Dance-off.

It’s also a FREE one, but WIDR is in a tough financial way these days and SURE COULD USE A DONATION IF YOU’VE GOT ANY CASH TO SPARE (HINT HINT).

This will be a good time.

I guarantee it.
