10:45 – 11:15: Solar Fox – Chicago, IL
Paisley psychedelic featuring Plastic Crimewave.
11:30 – 12: The Reptilian – Kzoo
Tappy screamy post hardcore Minus The Bear cover band. Could use another guitar player… better as a four-piece.
With all this eclectic awesomeness, it’ll be more than worth the $5 door charge. Music starts at 2 P.M. SHARP, and we’ll keep on jamming until midnight. First 50 people through the door get a limited edition Reunion cassette. Git sum.
This upcoming event is a show I’ve been hyping up since I first heard about it. After seeing Daniel Francis Doyle play several months back the last time he stopped at the Strutt, I was completely floored. He is a one man band, utilizing loop petals and multi-instrumentalist talent to it’s full potential. That being said, though his show is a wonderful spectacle, his music is strange and captivating enough without the one man band aspect, I would recommend his work no matter how the stage presence is.
This time the show is also stacked with some of Kalamazoo’s finest. Starting off with a staple to this local music scene, Tim Tapper. He is an impressive songwriter, ever changing and improving his style.
Also on the bill is a new up and coming group, Witch Fingers, who feature members from the Reptilian, Ackley Kid and Forget the Times. For any fans of mathy yelly hardcore, this will be a group to look out for. Though this will be only their second show, these are well-seasoned musicians who will likely impress you.
And finally the Kalamazoo Duo Good News will also be performing their brand of highly technical aggressive math rock. These two have technical skill that is tough to match, that any musician in the room would be hard pressed not to watch.
The doors for this show are at 8pm and show begins at 9. The cost of entry is $5.
Running a DIY venue can be a rather daunting task, but is also very rewarding in many ways. It’s also a great way to get involved in the local scene, and more importantly, keep the music going. So we at DIT Kalamazoo are here to bring you some HOUSE SHOW TIPS!
1.Meet your Neighbors!
In my experience the most critical thing you can do to make sure your house shows run uninterrupted is to simply meet your neighbors. Go door to door let them know your plans for hosting events at your house, because these people most likely will be the ones who call your local boys in blue. Let them know when you’re planning events, assure them you’re going to be in complete control of the situation, and that it isn’t just some out of control party. Also, ask them when it would best work into their schedules for you to have shows (everybody has early mornings sometimes).
2. Exchange phone numbers.
Make sure your neighbors know to call you first if there are any problems whatsoever. Unfortunately, some people will never be down with noisy neighbors, but the fact that you took the time to meet them does nothing but paint a positive image of you, what you’re doing, and that you care about your community.
There will be more tips in the coming weeks on running your own house shows, but if you are seriously interested and would like real help, or you have more specific questions, you can always visit one of our meetings (every Sunday, 611 Cedar street, 4pm).

Good times are to be had at the Strutt Friday night (9/2) so make sure your there! Doors at 8:30, show at 9:30, five bucks at the door.
CHILD BITE is from the Mitten’s own De-troit and they put one hell of a show. Experimental rock riffs to bang your head to.
PAN, ACKLEY KID, and AL SABO are all from right here in the good ol’ Kazoo. Cranking out prog and punk rock it’s sure to be a bangin’ time!
Tomorrow night, Louie’s Trophy House is playing host to a fantastic and phenomenal set of free jazz musicians. Their caliber is top-notch. Their quality is unquestioned. Their licks are wicked. So it is with Norwegian saxophonist Frode Gjerstad and his compatriots, Paal Nilssen-Love and Jon Rune Strøm.
Frode, ever an improviser, is bringing some serious fire to this big little city. As an avant-garde saxophonist, he is a fantastic player. Strøm is no slouch himself on that doghouse bass. Meanwhile, Nilssen-Love may be one of the best drummers alive. Don’t believe me? Well then.
And Nilssen-Love doing his thing:
Opening the show, Kalamazoo locals and similarly-minded experimental musicians UNITARD will be bringing their all to the fore. If you haven’t seen Unitard before, this would be a good chance to check them out. If you have seen them, then you know what to expect and how excellent this event really should be.
If you’re a fan of experimental music, this is the show for you. If you’re a fan of sheer instrumental virtuosity, control and technique, this is the show for you. If you simply want your brain to melt a little bit, I’d show up all the same.
The cost is 8 bucks at the door – a paltry sum for such a fantastic display of musicianship. Plus, you didn’t have to buy a ticket to fly to Norway to see the Trio, so that’s a savings of roughly 1300 dollars off the bat.
Doors open at 8. Show starts at 9. I’ll be there.
Our weekly DIT(K) meetings are being moved to a more centrally located spot fr yr health.
From now on meetings will be at 611 Cedar, Kalamazoo, 4pm Sunday afternoon.
As always, everyone is invited. The meetings mostly consist of making sure promotion is in place for upcoming shows and setting up shows for touring bands. If you’ve got a band you want booked, a show you need a venue for, a house you want to throw shows at, sweet writing or drawing skillzz, then come on down!
If yr one that tries to stay current on the local music affairs then you probably already know aboot the quickly up and coming Already Dead Tapes & Records. You may also know aboot their first annual music fest The Already Dead Family Reunion that is coming up in 2 weeks.
Just in case though, here’s all the info you could need:
Already Dead is a tape and vinyl label founded about a year ago by Josh Tabbia (Problems That Fix Themselves) and Sean Hartman (Forget The Times). Inspired by former Kalamazoo label Dinosaur Club Tapes, the two decided to pick up the torch and run with it.
Since then, AD has released 10 albums with another 10 quickly on the way. The label is home to a wide variety of artists from all over the world with a focus on the experimental and innovative.

Summer is almost over and once again The Strutt is putting on a banger of a show or should I say a smanger of a show which of course means it will be a smash and a banger…
Royal Baths hails from San Francisco, CA. They will be jamming their poppy garage rock tunes at the Strutt along with Pessoa from Indianapolis,IN. I got to see Pessoa play in Indy once when my band played with them and it was a killer show. If you are into catchy twinkly jams, you should check them out.
Local rebellious garage rockers, Inflatable Best Friend will be playing as well. Doors at 8:30, Show starts at 9:30. $5 at the door. If you do dat facebook thing, check it out here. Stay baggy.
Get your butt off the couch, stop watching dumb football and get down to the Strutt this Sunday for some rad post rock and emo jamz. Empire! Empire! and Mountains For Clouds are stopping in Kalamazoo on their August tour to meet up with An Aesthetic Anaesthetic from Chicago and local gig stars Analecta.
Empire! Empire! comes from Fenton,MI and play twinkly emo in the vein of Mineral and American Football. With their always revolving cast of band members, Keith and Cathy continue to crank out releases and tour frequently. The happy couple runs a record label called Count Your Lucky Stars out of their home and help many bands in the midwest and all over put out cool releases as well. Mountains For Clouds, who also come from the east side of the mitten, play twinkly jams as well but with a more post rock kinda twist. They remind me a lot of a mathy Appleseed Cast if that tickles your fancy at all.
Also joining the fun is An Aesthetic Anaesthetic from Chicago,IL with their raw post rock sounds. And finally some what local boys, Analecta, will be playing epic post rock that will give you the pee pee shakes. I’ve known and watched these guys play in a handful of different kinds of bands and every time I see them live, it gets me more excited for what these guys are gonna put out next.
Doors at 8:00 and show at 9:00. $5 dollars and all ages. Couldn’t ask for a better Sunday gig. Here is that Facebook thang too.
