Folk For Many Folks – Axel & Marcus Quinlan, Ugly Brothers, Lousy Trouts, Deep Waters – 5.27

Louie’s Trophy House will be the place for fans of acoustic music from across the board. Be it gruff of ethereal, there’s something for all tastes. The night is particularly exciting, as two Milwaukee bands are making their first trek to Kalamazoo.

UGLY BROTHERS are a large band of rag tag soulful folk singers. For fans of The Avett Brothers, Elvis Perkins, and Tik Tok, but a bit more rough around the edges than those examples – not that they are not fine players – just a tangible authenticity in their style.

LOUSY TROUTS on the other hand, are quite reminiscent of Lonesome Crowded West era Modest Mouse – but all acoustic and refreshingly new to your ears.

Also this night, not so lousy, not so trouty, not so ugly, but definitely brothers – Axel and Marcus Quinlan will be playing their first set as a duo since August. Axel is the former songwriter for The Almanac Shouters, and has been working on a large body of solo work for the last couple of years. Each show is a glimpse into some portion of what is to be a cohesive concept album.

Also backing up the traveling acts would be the profoundly ethereal Deep Waters – a project started by talented local musician DSK as a keyboard project – many of the songs are now often performed live on acoustic guitar. Meditate and contemplate, get pensive but not sad.

Bring yourself, bring your friends, bring five dollars, bring what is left of your show worn ears. Tip the waitstaff and give the sound engineer a high five.

Ghost Mice of Plan-it-X Return To Kalamazoo at Full House (2.0) 3/24/13

ghostmice

Ghost Mice playing in Kalamazoo almost exactly 5 years ago at Rocketstar Cafe. Photo by Jes Kramer.

It’s been almost four years since the acoustic duo Ghost Mice (featuring Chris Clavin, co-founder of the almost 20 years standing record label Plan-it-X) have been in Kalamazoo Michigan. Not too long after that tour, Ghost Mice called a hiatus, mostly due to fiddle player Hannah having a kiddo. Chris did several solo tours since then, a couple of which he ended up playing wonderful shows in Kalamazoo. However, they’re back as the original band and they’ve got a new album  “All We’ve Got Is Eachother,” with a fuller sound than previous, and they are just as sweet of folks as they’ve ever been.

Speaking of new albums, also on the bill for this show is local guitar and violin duo Lincoln County War, who will be releasing their first ever recordings at this show! Though LCW has been playing locally for roughly three years, the only recorded material of theirs can be found mostly on dodgy youtube videos, so come to this show to purchase at a super affordable price, properly recorded versions of these songs. Though the set up for LCW and Ghost Mice are similar, the sound is much different. Although they could both be classified as “folk punk,” Lincoln County features an angrier, harsher tone, more akin with Andrew Jackson Jihad, or if Nick Cave’s Murder Ballads were stripped down.

Long-time Kalamazoo underground composer Travis of Circle, Get Square will also be performing. Whether Travis is currently living in Kalamazoo or anywhere else, if he is performing in Kalamazoo, he is treated and appreciated like a dear local. Stylistically shifting from lo-fi keyboard pop tunes to full, melancholic folk songs, Circle, Get Square is a dynamic project that if you haven’t yet seen, you’re definitely not going to want to miss.

Finally, Arms Akimbo will also be performing to round out this acoustic endeavor. Though this project is the newest locally, Topher, the singer/songwriter of this one man project, has been writing and performing for many years, and for several different musical stylings. Here you will find introspective folk songs, fitting perfectly into the mix of this show.

You can see excellent samples of all three locals by browing through http://www.DITsessions.com

This show will start at 7PM on Sunday the 24th, and is the first show at this location! If you don’t know where it is, shoot an email to DIT. Please bring donations for the touring group (or even some dollars for merch), and please respect the household.

TONIGHT: Jerry Fels and the Jerry Fels w/ Boy Becomes Hero, Nick DeMott, and Neil Shah @ THE BLACK LODGE

Image

Tonight The Black Lodge will be hosting an acoustic night featuring Jerry Fels and the Jerry Fels, who is actually just one man. Currently on tour to celebrate his 2011 release “Evil is the Root of All Money,” Jerry is a solo acoustic performer whose music has both a poignant introspection and a wonderful sense of humor. With such songs as “Bad Bad Bad Bad Money” and “Girl You Make Me Want to Change My Number,” Jerry’s tongue is planted firmly in his cheek.

Supporting him are several local performers including Boy Becomes Hero, folk songs with a distinctly personal bent.

Nick DeMott, who veers through various topics with a whimsical appreciation for the American roots folk/ blues sound.

Rounding it out will be Neil Shah, best known for his involvement with several popular Kalamazoo bands like Ackley Kid, Witch Fingers, and Statia.

Show starts at 9PM. Please bring donations for the traveling troubadour.

Tweehouse of Horror – Tweepop/Acoustic Show at Milhouse!

Tomorrow, October 6th at 8:00 PM, there will be an acoustic, twee pop show featuring touring acts Madeline Ava and Mitch the Champ, as well as locals!

Madeline Ava plays tweepop on ukulele and sings about being nervous and how great her friends are. If you are a fan of Plan-It-X Records, she is to not be missed.

Mitch the Champ plays folk punk, and also occasionally plays his songs on a Casio electric guitar. If you’d like to know more of what that is all about, you’re just going to have to come to the show to find out!

Also performing is Pete Zange, AKA Angela. They are a long time supporter of the Kalamazoo music scene, and will be performing for the first time! Come show your support like they have done for many of the events here!

Rory Svekric from the Almanac Shouters will also be playing a couple of old songs she wrote. It will be her first solo show as well.

Come on over and see friends, and make new friends too!
