Something Old, Something New, Something From New York @ MILHOUSE 3.25

porchesflyer copy

Eclectic doesn’t necessarily mean difficult, and here is a prime example of artists drawing from many different sources to create compelling and catchy music that’s hella tasty for  your earbuds!

PORCHES. a full band and sometimes solo project of Aaron Maine, is a blend of folk and indie rock in an unexpected way. Traveling all the way from New York to our humble basements, PORCHES. are here to share with you captivating and moving songwriting you can get your dance on to. This group is labelmates of such wonderful groups as Pile, Speedy Ortiz, Krill, Kal Marks and many others who may have already impressed you.

This show will also feature a resurgence of Double Phelix man of mystery GITIS BAGGS! Although Gitis has been playing music consistently in a myriad of local projects, his solo work has not been heard for some time. That being said, Gitis plays wonderful experimental and thoughtful folk that is lush, ambient, and strange. You wont want to miss!

PLUS while we’re at it, TRANCERS, a newer local project, will be making their basement debut. From influences all across the board, you can tell these folks have deeply entrenched themselves in music fandom, and are sharing their findings with us all.

Show starts at 9:00. Please donate what you can, as PORCHES. have traveled quite a ways to get here, and need to sometime get home. Be excellent to each other. Dance yr butts off. Contact DITkalamazoo@gmail.com for the address.

Speedy Ortiz / Cobalt Mexican Wolves / The Uncanny – Milhouse – 12.10.13

Speedy Ortiz are a band out of Northampton, MA who have been fortunate enough to have received a lot of positive attention from larger publications. Their hard work and talent has been noticed, and through that they’re getting opportunities to play with bigger indie bands in big venues.

But the thing about Speedy Ortiz is that the four weirdo rockers have an affinity for Kalamazoo, ever since playing here on their first major tour in the summer of 2012. On their way out from the east coast to play several shows with The Breeders, they’re making a quick last minute stop to a dingy basement in our small, snowy college town.

If you’ve seen them, chances are you’re already planning on going to this show. If you’re unfamiliar, Speedy Ortiz are a hard-hitting rock group, packed to the gills with hooks without the cheesy aspect. They bring just the right balance of noise and melody to keep it interesting. You walk away from the show wanting to listen to the recordings, and you walk away from the record wanting to start it over again.

If my words fail you, maybe this will help:

Local support for this rad show will be Cobalt Mexican Wolves – the enigmatic dance machine from the Double Phelix group, fronted by Fiona Dickinson

As well as New(er) to the scene The Uncanny, a retro oldschool vintage throwback surfy instrumental project, comprised of folks from many other local bands, and inspired by the haunted or cursed guitar of another local musician.

This show will start at 8:00 on the dot! Please bring a buck or two as per usual. Please be excellent to everyone around you, and everyone around you will act in kind. Respect the everything and remember how much you like Kalamazoo.

Beautiful Voices, Wonderful People: Fiona Dickinson, Told Slant, Deep Waters, Florist @ ithinkyercute House 10.14

This Monday, two New York artists, TOLD SLANT and FLORIST will be touring into Kalamazoo to perform in the new(er) house venue, the ithinkyercute house.

This show will incorporate elements of folk, coupled with spacious and intense ambient influence. All the artists are guaranteed to make you feel some feel.

TOLD SLANT is a three piece indie folk outfit headed by distinct-sounding singer Felix Walworth. Though the songs our simple, they have a compelling strong honest feel that is hard to ignore. Plus, their live presentation is unconventional, as can be seen here:

Told Slant is on tour with FLORIST who play spacey, off-kilter folk music. The sort of music that is perfect for fall, and for sitting in a home self-reflecting with all your friends.

Supporting these traveling folks will be FIONA DICKINSON,  a local favorite as far as intense folk songwriting, and a true powerhouse when it comes to an honestly compelling live presence. DEEP WATERS will also be performing richly complex and thoughtful compositions. Sometimes performed with guitars, sometimes keyboards – just going to have to show up to find out!

This show is starting at 8:00, Please bring money for the traveling acts. Respect the house, the bands, yourself.

ithinkyercute is a fairly new location in town, so if you need the address email ditkalamazoo@gmail.com.

12/1: Double Felix produced peace-jams to wobble-about Kalamazoo Peace Center; Lasso, del Brutto, and Mike Savina

"...except that one scruffy musician, you know, the one that drinks beer"

“All are welcome…even scruffy musicians!”

Western’s Wesley Foundation seems to be the hosting-site for all sorts of acoustic assemblies lately: both the punk-show held last month, and Saturday night’s Double-Phelix themed Peace Phest at 8 p.m., both hosted by the folks of the Kalamazoo Peace Center. Usually the college’s hub for the United Methodist Ministry, the KPC uses the Wesley Foundation and such events to minister doses of green-sense  to the college-aged populace of our fair city; a perusal of their website reveals showings of Gasland, If A Tree Falls, and various public announcements against corporate tyranny. On the website there is even some attention thrown towards the ECO anti-frackers that were being legally lionized over at the Stabbin’ Cabin Friday–but that’s just a distraction. Saturday’s festivities, just like Friday night’s, are all about the fundraising–or merely about fund raising, as there is a suggested donation of five dollars to go towards continuing such activities.

As for the music, it’s regional with a spit of local flair–flavor provided primarily by production/ musical rotating cast Double Phelix Studios. del Brutto, the blues psycho folk sounding fellows from Ann Arbor playing Saturday night, had their recent album Greenhorn produced by Andy Caitlin over at the studio behind Black Owl. The result is garage sound filled with notes of a tin-rattling blues-guitar and a vocal style akin to the maddening rambles of the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion. Sounds like it could be playing in someone’s back porch somewhere with Christmas lights and stuffed hunting prizes, through a lo-fi microphone. Good for the blurry-bar romp, or the exhalation of twitching music nerves. Mike Savina of the Double Phelix collective is also slated to join the group for some added mellow melodies.

Lasso, Andy Caitlin’s solo-soundtrack-western-project, will be providing the other half of the Double Phelix themed performances Saturday night. Like Ennio Morricone bumping into the medicine cabinet and tripping on some smooth Valium (although the metaphor is ruined when realized it isn’t a psychedelic.) Though tomorrow seems to be calling for the 8-piece collective effort  it can be hoped that the goofy, plunking piano, and moseying guitar that seem so aware of the genre Lasso is emulating, satirizing, and ultimately will remain the premise and fun of the project, and in-turn the performance will be just as endearing. Lasso’s newest EP  Lasso, Arizona was released this past Wednesday:

Wesley Foundation is right across from the Flagpoles of Western University, the pinnacle of the hill–or for more tech savvy users just use this address (2101 Wilbur Ave.,  Kalamazoo, MI 49006) with Google Maps.

Respect the venue, respect the bands, and mayhaps donate a few dollars for less broken bones around the world. Or least in Kalamazoo.
