A Big Night in Kalamazoo 9/12

There’s a lot to do in Kalamazoo tonight, and so no excuses not to find yourself somewhere.

First and Foremost, An active Kalamazoo show-goer and all-around great guy, Jerrod Smith, has unfortunately passed away after a battle with illness. There will be a excellent benefit show thrown tonight in his honor and remembrance.

Jerrod

This line-up will consist of The Mushmen (kzoo ska),  AJ Draper (kzoo music),  Decades (kzoo music), Ghost Bunnies (kzoo rock), The Wrap (kzoo insanity), and featuring Jerrod Smith & the Windmill Full of Corpses (kzoo rock), who will be showcasing as many of Jerrod’s favorite tunes as possible.

8pm is go-time. All money collected will go to help Jerrod’s family.

Also up that night, there’s some jazz and such happening at Milhouse. From Rome, Italy, Bulldog Drummond will be playing fusion music, as will UK touring act World Service Project. Kalamazoo locals Rotten Wood Moon, as well as Saxsquatch and Bridge Band, will round out the set.

Dinner is served around 8. Donations will be asked to help the touring bands get where they need to go.

50th show at Milhouse! – Get Heavy/Get Weird 8.5

The folks at Milhouse have just passed their two year mark in the house! Also, this show will represent the 50th in a two year span. Come celebrate and help encourage 50 more!

This show is a sort of mixed bag of sounds, so likely there’s something for everyone, or at least for everyone who can dig on strange sounds.

THE JOINT CHIEFS OF MATH hail from Philadelphia, organized as a guitar/drum duo unlike any other. The guitarist’s pedal board set up is out of this world, making the live performance hard to believe, and the sound intense and full. If you’re into heavy math rock sorts of bands, this will be your bag. If you’re in to electronics, this band will probably also be something you want to see.

REPTILIAN SHAPE SHIFTERS are not local band The Reptilian. They are however a conspiracy theory math rock band from Oakland California. Incorporating technical prowess with the heaviness we’ve all grown to know and love from many shows in the Milhouse basement, this is a band that you will not want to miss.

VVRVVLF (Formerly WearWolf) is an enigmatic one man dancy noise onslaught, fully prepared to bring the party as well as a tad bit of alienation. VVRVVLF played the second show at Milhouse, and the man behind the mask has played several times in other projects there too.

THE UNCANNY are a newer local band with a vintage vibe. Sounding like a spooky interpretation of The Ventures, The Uncanny are four dudes that may have killed local musician Matt Maier and stolen unfinished demos from his ghost.

As always bring donations for the touring bands, be excellent to every single last being and entity, and enjoy the noise.

August 24, 2012 at Victory House: Kevin Greenspon (LA) + Queen Bee Dream (GR) + Kyle Landstra (KZOO)

Victory House 8/24

a night of warm, honest vibes

Tomorrow, on Friday August 24th, Kevin Greenspon will be making his way through Kalamazoo on his three month tour throughout the U.S. He is crossing over to Kalamazoo from Ohio today, then up to Ludington on the 25th, Grand Rapids on the 26th, and Ann Arbor on the 27th. His live set on this tour will be accompanied by visual projections made by Paul from former selves and will definitely not be something to miss. A photo from him performing in front of these projections is posted below. He also heads the well-known ambient tape label Bridgetown Records and will have a lot of the Bridgetown catalog on hand throughout the tour. This is quite the tour for an ambient musician, so come out and show some support while showing him what the DIT scene in Kalamazoo has to offer!

Kevin Greenspon

Kevin Greenspon is a musician from Los Angeles, CA that blends ambient, electronic, drone, field recording and harsh noise. Primarily using guitar, effects and tape collage techniques, each song is an emotionally engaging arrangement of melodies and electronics fueled by a storytelling nature. Check out his bandcamp here.

Queen Bee Dream

Hailing from Grand Rapids, this up-and-coming experimental artist has already recorded and put together three of his own tapes by hand, dubbed on found tapes. Dave is dangling on the fringe of the No Wave/Post Punk sound with a hollow, deep guitar sound, honest vocal styling and lyricism, and drums thanks to his Korg ElecTribe A (EA-1). His three tapes definitely have a progression of sound leading up to more concise compositions, but a lot of my favorite tracks were on his first tape. Last time I was in Grand Rapids I had visited him and checked out his set up. Be excited for his debut performance and make sure to check out his bandcamp here prior!

Kyle Landstra

Kyle Landstra currently resides in Kalamazoo. He creates improvised synthesizer music for listeners to close their eyes to and gaze at the soundscapes being formed in their minds. Here is his bandcamp.

Join the event here. Come out around 9 and we will get the show going soon after since it will be a shorter show. Remember to bring bucks for our cross-country touring visitor or for the wide variety of Bridgetown Records catalog he will have! Respect everything!
