Satellite Records is hosting an evening of Experimental sounds tomorrow. Add that to the Jack Tell / Heavy Leaves / Aric Smejkal / Misery Loves Co. show at Milhouse and you’ve got a well rounded night of music!
Local favorites Forget The Times will be kicking off with a set of striped back Ambient drone featuring lots of Saxophone looping and feedback manipulation. Get ready for it!

If you feel so inclined, this Wednesday there will be two shows back to back! Satellite Records, now always beginning their shows at 6:00 PM will have sounds from the noisy gnar full band of legendary locals FORGET THE TIMES, as well as outta towners THE KBD SONIC COLLECTIVE. Expect soundscapes and meditation, with breaks filled with the sound equivalent of harsh reality.
Beyond that, MILHOUSE will be having a living room (or possibly porch) show, featuring some excellent folks out of one of our favorite cities, Milwaukee! HEAVY LEAVES and JACK TELL play their own personal brands of sad, contemplative folk. Singing songs that feel relateable as they do important.
This show will also feature locals MISERY LOVES CO., the solo project of Josh Miller of Forget The Times/Shoto. If he can play two shows, assuredly you can make it to at least one as a spectator! Also local ARIC SMEJKAL of Edith will be bringing his excellent solo works. Both locals are going to bum you the fuck out but you’ll probably also really dig it.

SIR RICHARD BISHOP is an incredibly talented guitarist that has been making waves in underground music since 1979. He’s led the band Sun City Girls and Rangda in addition to creating an impressive body of solo work. His most recent albums have been released by the Drag City label. His sound draws heavily from various World Music and Avant-garde influences. Prepare yourself for a truly sublime and trans-formative experience tonight. This is not one to miss!
ROBERT MILLIS is a founding member of Climax Golden Twins and AFCGT. He has also produced some excellent solo work including film scores, sound installations and many contributions to the Sublime Frequencies label. Robert has self described his music as “Pete Seeger trying to cover Revolution #9 by The Beatles”
SEAN & FIONA are a local duo project from Sean Hartman of Forget The Times and Fiona Dickinson of Saltbreaker. They perform only on special occasions with this project. This will their 4th show in about that many years. Their sound draws from Free Jazz, Folk and Classical influences and is largely improvised.
Doors are at 6pm tonight and music kicks off at 6:30 sharp!

Tonight, Kalamazoo will be in the presence of greatness.
These days, that’s almost not saying much. There are so many incredible shows happening a regular, weeknight basis that it’s easy to become callous to the level of talent our little city attracts. Well, let me try to convince you that tonight stands out at least a little bit from the rest:
Let’s talk about Hypercolor.
First, I suggest letting the above link play while yr browsing. Because at the end of the day, no matter how well written a DIT post is, it’s basically just a colorful way to try and convince you to actually stop and listen to the band.
Hypercolor is from New York City. They are an instrumental trio with a wonderfully complex yet deceptively simple songwriting approach. The kind of music that simultaneously appeals to music scholars and casual listeners. Songs often have an unusual flow with slight atonal quirks or unexpected changes. But there is still a wonderful Pop edge present at all times. They’re not afraid to explore but have no wish to alienate the listener in the process.
Hypercolor just put out a new album on Tzadik Records. If you’re familiar with the label run by Avant-garde luminary, John Zorn then you already know this show can’t be missed. If not, maybe you got a chance to see their label mates Les Rhinoceros at Milhouse. This show will be of the same caliber.
Here’s what Tzadik has to say about the band: “A crazy collaborative jazz-rock unit out of the new generation of Downtown improvisers, Hypercolor is a bizarre trio that blends Beef- heart, Sonny Sharrock and ’80s punk with contemporary classical orchestral textures, spastic world music rhythms and noise improvisation. Sonic madness featuring the twisted guitar of Eyal Maoz, the deep toned bass of James Ilgenfritz and the grooving drums of African music aficionado Lukas Ligeti.”

This winter has seen a slow down in house shows, so if you’re looking to break up the drabness of the February weather, this would be a solid opportunity.
HORDES are long time experimenters out of Lansing, MI, who are bringing their heaviest, doomiest set yet to Kalamazoo.
SEVENTEEN AGAIN are back after a hiatus, and they’ve got new material to show off. Plus, because they’re mostly playing new stuff, their set is as short as when the first began, so you’re going to want to make it there on time to be sure you don’t miss ’em.
SHOTO are the heaviest, most technical band around Kalamazoo featuring three of the nicest guys that look somewhat like Charles Manson.
FORGET THE TIMES bring a new thing every time, and honestly it’s always been my favorite to see what their improvised set becomes on a louder set. You will not be disappointed.

Kalamazoo DIY has been bringing incredible music from all over the world to this tiny college town, but sometimes the real gems are right here in your own backyard. This Saturday, come and see some prime experimenters right from the mitten.
STORM ROSS is a multi-faceted three-piece out of Ann Arbor merging electronic experimentation with psychedelia and heavier elements. The sound is unique and effective, if you’re looking for something you haven’t seen before.
FORGET THE TIMES are local heavy hitters, performing with a variable cast for almost five years. Since they’re improv, there’s always something new with each show. If you’ve missed ’em, then you’re missing out.
WINDJAMMER is the newest project of experimentation in town, bringing full-fledged strangeness out of just one guitar. A literal merchant sailing ship of cool sounds.

If you haven’t heard, former Kalamazoo project turned Chicago project PROBLEMS THAT FIX THEMSELVES have released a new album. You can read all about it right here, on a lovely earlier DIT post. You can also go to the listening party at Satellite Records on the 29th, at 6:00PM, where you could win a free copy of the record!
Problems is a long-standing but ever changing noise project from Josh Tabbia, the Chicago counterpart to the Kalamazoo/Chicago tape and record label ALREADY DEAD, which you may or may not be familiar with from the Already Dead Family Reunion – a yearly musical event that happens in the fall based around the label.
Sean Hartman, the Kalamazoo counterpart to the label, will also be performing at the Milhouse show in his full band noise collective FORGET THE TIMES. A large difference in sound and performance style from Problems, this show is sure to illustrate variance of noise music to you, if you are still yet unfamiliar.
Finally, Kalamazoo favorites out of Chicago THE NEW DIET will be making another appearance. Though you may or may not have seen them before, rumor has it that this show will be somewhat of a departure from the stuff your familiar with. If you’re curious as to what that means, you’ll just have to come and find out. Here’s a snippet of an earlier performance of theirs at Milhouse.

LA HELL GANG
Hailing from Santiago, Chile. La Hell Gang bring plenty of 60’s Psych Rock influence played with a taste and control that makes their sound far from derivative. This band is essential for fans of Acid Mothers Temple, 13th Floor Elevators or Brown Company.
Here’s what Mexican Summer has to say about their latest album: “Imagine a still oasis on a man-made Martian desert, saturated with rust and red clay. Gravity has shifted slightly, though the atmosphere is warm and dense, and everything around you is moving more slowly than you are used to. You’re just waking up to this world, a realm not entirely beyond your comprehension, but all the same, part of a new reality to contend with and romanticize. Chilean rock trio La Hell Gang’s second album Thru Me Again is the soundtrack to this strange new land.

As someone who has been on the periphery of involvement in Already Dead Tapes & Records, and in the Family Reunion, I have often felt that Family Reunion VS Festival is such a fitting title for the event. If your friends are your family, like so often is the case in my life personally, you may feel similarly. Many of the artists who have played this fest have a vested interest in Kalamazoo – they live here currently, they’ve played here, they’ve found meaningful relationships here, and they’ve all been honing their craft for the year to showcase to you, and to the rest of the family/friends/aacquaintancesnewcomers in attendance.
But if you feel like you don’t know anyone on this list (and that might be true, this event focuses on some fairly unknown or under-praised artists) the structure allows for you to not even get to know some art you’ve never heard, but to get to know the people involved. This is what Kalamazoo does best and what keeps people coming here, the open mind about all sorts of music, and the openness to new people from near and far. Come meet the family – chances are it’ll actually be less awkward than an actual Family Reunion.

CELLULAR CHAOS(Brooklyn) a project of Weasel Walter of The Flying Leuttenbachers that plays some of the best freakout jazz punk you’ve never heard or will ever hear.
This Friday at Milhouse, expect to hear some loud, fast, experimental and instrumental gnar – from near and far.
U SCO, traveling all the way from Portland, Oregon, are making their first trip to Michigan, though one member previously played Milhouse in the band Duck, Little Brother, Duck! If you are a fan of Hella, Spelling Bee, or any of those other technically precise yet overwhelmingly chaotic bands, it is imperative that you check this band out. They have just released a new album, Treffpunkt, which they will have on tour.
if U SCO was not enough, local leaders in West Michigan noise music, FORGET THE TIMES will be making their first Milhouse appearance of 2014. If you’re unfamiliar, you’ll more or less have to check it out live because this improv collective is a different deal every time.
Finally, the band that is essentially Milhouse’s house band for angular bullshit punk, ANYBODY BUT THE COPS will also be making an appearance. A grab bag of highly planned music that sounds like a bunch of mistakes in a row, or 30something songs played as a medly. Expect a new track if you can find it!
