Punk//Punk//Queer//Punk//Punk – Bespin – 7.8

Like most or all of the songs you will hear if you attend this show, this post will be short and to the point.

MARINE CORPSE are a hardcore band out of Bloomington, IN, making their second appearance in Kalamazoo. Loud, fast, angry, and just the best people. They get rave reviews so if this seems like you’re thing you’re probably going to love it.

JANE IRE also came to Kalamazoo for Marine Corpse’s last trip, and are from Cleveland, OH. I cannot find recordings, but word on the street is their queer hardcore.

DICYCLE are Grand Rapids grind. Enough said.

ANYBODY BUT THE COPS are your friendly neighborhood trash compactor of punk and related sounds.

DONATE TO THE TOURING BANDS, FOR REAL. SHOW AT 9:00.

The Mushmen, The Sailor Kicks, and Joe Disastr at Old Dog Tavern Saturday May 17 2014

Kalamazoo’s most notorious punk/ska band The Mushmen will be blowing up the toilets at Old Dog Tavern with their friends The Sailor Kicks, and Joe Disastr.

Joe Disastr is a folk-punker from Illinois who’s got a pocket full of familiar melodies as well as some originals. Here’s a quieter moment from his live set:

Grand Rapids’ Sailor Kicks play uptempo americana with smooth harmonies, occasional horn flourishes, and guitar + bass that’ll transport you back to 1997.

Finally, The Mushmen have been skanking their way to the top of Kalamazoo’s music scene with their all-in high energy live show. Here’s a full length video for their song “Buy the ticket, take the ride”

For a peek at what these dudes look like up close and in person, check them out performing “Sleep” live at 89.1 WIDR-FM:

I honestly thought Benji might leap through my monitor and tackle me to the ground. But he’s a sweetheart, come give him a hug this Saturday at 8pm at the Old Dog Tavern.

Let ’em know how many of your smiling faces they can expect to see bobbing in the front row by RSVPing to the Mushmen & Friends Facebook event.

Restless and Reckless Powerpop Sad Bastard Jams To Help Get Through The Winter – High Dive (Bloomington, IN), Away Game (GR), Brown Cow – 2.21 – Milhouse

If you’re sick of being sad in the winter and just wish you could feel the sort of antsy malaise of the summer instead, the Milhouse basement has just what you’re looking for! Powerpop, pop punk, bummer summer, and other sorts of sadpop summertime jams will be happening, so come over and forget the several feet of snow and the inevitable last few cars you will push out of a ditch before it’s over.

HIGH DIVE are a band out of Bloomington, Indiana whose musicians are associated with other wonderful and varied bands such as Defiance, Ohio, Good Luck, Toby Foster, Pink Houses, Community Currency and plenty more that I’m guaranteed to not even be aware of. They play pop punk with ferocity and an unparalleled sincerity. Music filled with self-reflection and queer positivity, it’s just the sort of themes best expressed in a medium you can scream along and dance to.

Here’s a couple of songs from their performance at The Fest in Gainsville, FL:

AWAY GAME from Grand Rapids are bringing their version of lo-fi basement pop to Kalamazoo for the first time. Friends and former collaborator of modern powerpop heartthrob Sam Cook-Parrot of Radiator Hospital, you know these folks have the know how to make the music that makes you bob your head while feeling decidedly slightly despondent.

Finally, BROWN COW of local notoriety / infamy / will be making their first appearance at Milhouse. Mallory and the dudes bring sad slacker folk rock to a whole new level. This band has been showcasing their work around Kalamazoo for a couple of years, and I feel like I messed up by only recently checking out their music – don’t make the same mistake I did! Though their recordings are from a bit of time ago, rumor has it there’s new songs in the work that may make an appearance.

Show starts at 9:00! Please bring money to donate, as gas is never cheap when you’re lugging a fender rhodes or any other gear. Please respect everyone and everything around you, I feel they’ll do so in kind to you.

Punk / Emo Friday 5/24 @ The Courthouse

Great night of punk rock and emo coming this Friday to The Courthouse. We have 5 acts all from the Midwest coming out for what’s sure to be an awesome show!

Into it. Over it. Somewhere in between the Smoking popes and Sparta, Into it. Over it. puts together an amazing set. Since the debut of their first full length studio album, Proper, these guys have been generating a lot of well deserved buzz. Make sure you don’t miss these guys from Chicago and show them a little Kzoo love!

Pop Punk, Emo, Post Punk

Kittyhawk This band makes some real mellow and poignant music. Kate Grube delivers lyrics with a voice you’d expect to be fronting a modern folk band instead of an Emo four piece from Chicago; but some how it works perfect, creating a sincere and intimate sound.

Alternative,  Emo. Indie Rock

Brave Bird This Ann Arbor trio delivers a really tight, high-energy show. Their sound is full of complex rhythms and a gut wrenching, gritty singing style.

Emo, Indie, Math, Punk

George Costanza Kzoo locals George Costanza have an eclectic take on the punk genre that really escapes a solid definition of sound. What ever you want to call it, they rock.

Punk, Dingus, Emo, Scremo, Twinkly

Running Shoes  Strait out of GR with a style that’s both familiar and still fresh. These guys have some really interesting guitar riffs that trade off playfully with some fairly complex drumming. Its like Jazz with distortion and angst.

Punk, Emo, Twinkly

Show starts at 9pm.  Come hang out! Unless you hate your ears or something. As always any donations for the out of town acts is wicked appreciated!
