A Big Night in Kalamazoo 9/12

There’s a lot to do in Kalamazoo tonight, and so no excuses not to find yourself somewhere.

First and Foremost, An active Kalamazoo show-goer and all-around great guy, Jerrod Smith, has unfortunately passed away after a battle with illness. There will be a excellent benefit show thrown tonight in his honor and remembrance.

Jerrod

This line-up will consist of The Mushmen (kzoo ska),  AJ Draper (kzoo music),  Decades (kzoo music), Ghost Bunnies (kzoo rock), The Wrap (kzoo insanity), and featuring Jerrod Smith & the Windmill Full of Corpses (kzoo rock), who will be showcasing as many of Jerrod’s favorite tunes as possible.

8pm is go-time. All money collected will go to help Jerrod’s family.

Also up that night, there’s some jazz and such happening at Milhouse. From Rome, Italy, Bulldog Drummond will be playing fusion music, as will UK touring act World Service Project. Kalamazoo locals Rotten Wood Moon, as well as Saxsquatch and Bridge Band, will round out the set.

The Reptilian Returns! The Courthouse. 7.27

The Reptilian and Alta are touring for like a billion years and then coming back to Kalamazoo to play a show at The Courthouse! Show starts at 8 PM//$3-$5 for touring bands//be respectful of each other and the house!

ALTA(Milwaukee,WI): http://alta.bandcamp.com Raw and emotional, Alta brings an interesting twist to the skramz genre. Layered and beautifully flowing, this is a band not to be missed. If you like The Rep, you’ll find something to love in this.

AU REVOIR(NJ): http://aurevoirit.bandcamp.com/ With a textural and sonically massive sound, Au Revoir do post rock very well. Beautiful melodies and wandering soundscapes. FFO Caspian and If These Trees Could Talk

THE REPTILIAN: http://thereptilianband.bandcamp.com/ You know them and love them. They’re back from their tour with Alta, and promise to bring a high energy performance.

ANYBODY BUT THE COPS Spazztastic, in your face punk! Hailing from Kalamazoo, they have a sound and emotion all their own, without having to say a word.

Punk / Emo Friday 5/24 @ The Courthouse

Great night of punk rock and emo coming this Friday to The Courthouse. We have 5 acts all from the Midwest coming out for what’s sure to be an awesome show!

Into it. Over it. Somewhere in between the Smoking popes and Sparta, Into it. Over it. puts together an amazing set. Since the debut of their first full length studio album, Proper, these guys have been generating a lot of well deserved buzz. Make sure you don’t miss these guys from Chicago and show them a little Kzoo love!

Pop Punk, Emo, Post Punk

Kittyhawk This band makes some real mellow and poignant music. Kate Grube delivers lyrics with a voice you’d expect to be fronting a modern folk band instead of an Emo four piece from Chicago; but some how it works perfect, creating a sincere and intimate sound.

Alternative,  Emo. Indie Rock

Brave Bird This Ann Arbor trio delivers a really tight, high-energy show. Their sound is full of complex rhythms and a gut wrenching, gritty singing style.

Emo, Indie, Math, Punk

George Costanza Kzoo locals George Costanza have an eclectic take on the punk genre that really escapes a solid definition of sound. What ever you want to call it, they rock.

Punk, Dingus, Emo, Scremo, Twinkly

Running Shoes  Strait out of GR with a style that’s both familiar and still fresh. These guys have some really interesting guitar riffs that trade off playfully with some fairly complex drumming. Its like Jazz with distortion and angst.

Punk, Emo, Twinkly

Show starts at 9pm.  Come hang out! Unless you hate your ears or something. As always any donations for the out of town acts is wicked appreciated!

Rockin’ Rockin’ Record Store 5.21 9:30PM

The Corner Record Shop is hosting an indie rock extravaganza, featuring four solid acts, three of which are some outta towners.

GRASS IS GREEN are an angular, energy-filled punk influenced force from Boston. Heavy sounds with catchy hooks that create a want to dance and break stuff simultaneously (do not break or damage the record store’s merchandise)

OVLOV are a grungy pop wall of lush guitars also coming out of the east coast. They have an energy that makes you wish they were your favorite local band to sing all the words along with.

RADIATOR HOSPITAL are a former Grand Rapids now Current Philly band based around songwriter Sam Cook-Parrot. Ranging from high-energy powerpop full band performances, to solo acoustic bummerpop renditions, and spawning from lo-fi bedroom recordings, Sam covers all bases of truly excellent pop music.

BORING PEOPLE are local new sensation, bringing a full band take to a local songwriter’s long time bedroom recording project. If Ovlov are the band you wish were your local favorites, Boring People are sure to become near and dear to your heart.

This show starts at 9:30! Pring money for the touring folks, and bring money to buy records because the register will still be open. Bring your own beer if that’s what you require. Bring your lovely positive self and all your buddies.

TONIGHT: ZOMBIE PROM @ THE BLACK LODGE

Darkness falls across the land…

The midnight hour is close at hand…

Ah, do you remember your prom? A celebration of all your least favorite pop songs that were over-saturated by your local radio station, full of hormone driven misfits dancing around in a trance-zombie-like fashion.

At The Black Lodge, we like to tell it how it is. That’s why we’re putting together ZOMBIE PROM, a chance for you and your sweetie to relive the fun of dressing up with all the post-modern ironic zest of dressing up like zombies! Featuring music that is actually good without the high school dramatics, with a tiny dash of FUN FUN HORROR.

Inflatable Best Friend will be kicking things off with their fun, dance-ready punk rock. Coming on the heels of the release of their new album “DMT Bike Ride,” they should be full of surplus amounts of HAMMAGE.

Arson Party is a progressive metal band with members from both Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo. Best described as hardcore metal as written by a set of meticulous, obsessive-compulsive hands. Their melodically sung lyrics have been known to get stuck in the heads of innumerable Michigan metalheads.

That’s Blood are some local punk rockers with a heavy sound sprinkled with small fingerprints of 80’s California hardcore.

Abortion Survivors are another group of local punk rockers who shred and shred and then, even though one would think t’would be enough of said shredding, decide to shred for additional amounts of time. Speed, pep, and go, that should indeed make the body flow.

Cavalcade are a band from Lansing that perhaps is the closest to sounding directly like some sort of Satanic spell that could summon a veritable zombie apocalypse. Their sound is an evil hybrid beast, with vocals skewing towards what one might find a black metal record with instrumentation that finds an inexplicable place between doom and surf punk.

Show starts at 9. Get in the spirit and come as a zombie with your sweetheart! Or alone in some sort of Halloween costume! You could potentially come by yourself as yourself, but that shows a definitive lack of the ghoulish Halloween spirit.
