Hold onto your hats, this is gonna be a wild one.

CARAVELS are coming through town, on tour all the way from Nevada. From fast and aggressive to emotional and drifting melodies they aren’t something you want to miss. Punk never sounded so good.

ACKLEY KID One of two hometown heroes on this show. Punk beats and circle pits all night, come drink some beer and get rowdy.

THE REPTILIAN Noodle masters of the midwest with a serious edge. These guys have been tearing it up for a few years now, and they have no interest in slowing down. Sing along, jump up and down and stuff.

And some food for thought.

Daniel Francis Doyle and more at the Strutt TOMORROW NIGHT

This upcoming event is a show I’ve been hyping up since I first heard about it. After seeing Daniel Francis Doyle play several months back the last time he stopped at the Strutt, I was completely floored. He is a one man band, utilizing loop petals and multi-instrumentalist talent to it’s full potential. That being said, though his show is a wonderful spectacle, his music is strange and captivating enough without the one man band aspect, I would recommend his work no matter how the stage presence is.

This time the show is also stacked with some of Kalamazoo’s finest. Starting off with a staple to this local music scene, Tim Tapper. He is an impressive songwriter, ever changing and improving his style.

Also on the bill is a new up and coming group, Witch Fingers, who feature members from the Reptilian, Ackley Kid and Forget the Times. For any fans of mathy yelly hardcore, this will be a group to look out for. Though this will be only their second show, these are well-seasoned musicians who will likely impress you.

And finally the Kalamazoo Duo Good News will also be performing their brand of highly technical aggressive math rock. These two have technical skill that is tough to match, that any musician in the room would be hard pressed not to watch.

The doors for this show are at 8pm and show begins at 9. The cost of entry is $5.

Daniel Francis Doyle returns to Kalamazoo Oct. 3

If you caught Daniel Francis Doyle’s set at La Iglesia last time he came through town, you probably experienced the same sense of perplexity, surprise, and delight that I did. He’s a man with three first names and he works a loop pedal like no one else I’ve seen.

Doyle will start out a song by recording a random and incomprehensible series of guitar phrases that I’m sure only the man himself can wrap his mind around; he’ll then pause what he has looped, sit down at a drum set, and proceed to simultaneously manipulate the guitar playback along to his drumming – all while singing into a headset mic. It’s a remarkable display of creativity. Check out the video below to get a better understanding of what this one man alone can pull off.

Doyle is just about to begin a lengthy tour that has him on the road all the way through the month of October until the middle of November. He’ll be making the Strutt the fourth stop of his trip. Joining him will be three bands from across Michigan – newer Kalamazoo act, That’s Blood, who bring the shred in a hard way with their proggy, aggressive sound; Ferndale’s brilliantly mathematical The Summer Pledge; and the hyper-energetic punk frenzy of Radiator Hospital from Grand Rapids.
