Top Dirty, Kneebody, Saxquatch & Bridge Band @ Shakespeare’s $5 21+

Hold onto your butts, Kalamazoo, we’ve got a live one.

KNEEBODY is coming through, bringing their experimentally infused Jazz-based mastery to Shakespeare’s venerable Lower Level.

“Kneebody draws upon influences spanning D’Angelo’s Voodoo to music by Elliot Smith, Bill Frisell, and Miles Davis. Their live shows are known for intense sonic landscapes of the Radiohead ilk, for the rhythmic bombast of a Squarepusher or Queens of the Stone Age show, and the harmonic depth and improvisational freedom experienced at a Brad Mehldau concert.”

SAXSQUATCH & BRIDGE BAND are back to prove that not only are the rumors of Mr. Squatch’s demise greatly exaggerated, but also that it is physically possible for the irreverent mythical sax-o-phone wielding vagabond to be accompanied by a myriad of extremely musically talented bridges.

If you want to move and groove Saxsquatch and the Bridge Band will bring you solid jazz/blues inspired songs from days yore to shake your hedonistic butts to. Just make sure you hold on to those bad boys.

TOP DIRTY will also be playing and I’ve never had the pleasure of hearing them but if they fit their billing you won’t be disappointed.

Rock music that was broken and fixed except the pieces don’t quite fit together but it works just as good and looks cool so whatev.

WOW this looks to be a barn-burner, y’all. So go out and have a good time. Don’t skimp on the drinks, tip your waiter, try not to make too many unsolicited advances towards them, and as always.

Do it together, Kalamazoo.

5/23 – Kyckstands, ProConPro, Ghost Bunnies, Byjr., Lost Years @ Shakespeares

A buffet of upbeat local pop-punk and indie-pop bands are taking the stage at Shakespeare’s TONIGHT. Local yokels Kyckstands are reuniting to play the lower level with special guests ProConPro, Ghost Bunnies, Byjr., and, hailing from the deepest darkest recesses of Indiana, Lost Years.

This is the perfect type of music for a great night out at the bar. Also a great opportunity to see some amazing Kalamazoo locals, along with Lost Years which is a spunky Indie Punk Rock four piece.

No Bails (LP Release), Hex Bombs, Sniper 66, Legendary Wings, Broth @ Louie’s

Hey Pals! FRIDAY NIGHT there’s going to be a SHOW at Louie’s FEATURING THESE GUYS:

Forget the Times & SHOTO @ Corner Record Shop TONIGHT – 5/11/14

Everyone’s favorite experimental noise band Forget the Times is celebrating their return from touring with SHOTO tonight at the Corner Record Shop. If you’re not even doing the mother’s day thing, or are done pretending to love your family, an option for you to cap off your night with super loud and weird music does exist.

If you’re into this type of stuff you won’t regret it. Plus, you can help support some local musicians break even after touring.

Chicago Underground Duo / Prognosis Negative / WMU Jazz All-Stars 4/29

10277300_10201706059960894_4252183680553294501_n

Chicago Underground Duo are two veteran jazzers from Chicago, IL who formed the group after playing together in several projects such as: Chicago Underground Trio, Chicago Underground Quartet, and Chicago Underground Orchestra. I would assume that they’re touring to promote Locus, their latest recording. With this duo you get a crazy fusion of jazz, techno, film-music, and probably a thousand other genres that are unable to even be comprehended. This is all wrapped up with a tasteful, cute bow, that represents renowned musicianship.

Prognosis Negative, on the other hand, are two of Kalamazoo’s preeminent weird dudes (Sean “Hard Bagel” Hartman and THE SAXSQUATCH) who come together for this special project on certain occasions such as: bahtmitzva’s, times that you would rather be sleeping, opening for a completely unrelated act, and creeping out people who just walked into their performance and have no idea what is going on. They are a trip, to say the least. This is not any of those occasions, because this show presses the boundaries of what you can consider jazz, so they fit right in.

AND THE WMU JAZZ ALLSTARS are exactly what they sound like. A collection of all-stars from Western Michigan University who are intending to play jazz for all you fine folk.

The doors are at 8, the show is at 8:30, It’s at Louie’s Trophy House Grille. Come get your fancy suited.

Les Rhinocéros, Mold, Seventeen Again – Milhouse – Monday 4/28

Les Rhinocéros is a really great groovy experimental math rock band from Washington, DC. Don’t take my word for it, there are plenty of places you can find them on the internet. I had the opportunity to catch them at the Milhouse last year and I was absolutely blown away by their technical prowess and ability to create interesting and captivating emotive sounds-capes. If you’re a musician you should really check these guys out. I know that as an aspiring drummer I was inspired by the way their drummer plays.

Seventeen Again are awesome. They are one of my favorite local groups. Seventeen Again is like running with the bulls in Pamplona and falling down but getting out of the way just in time. Their sets are usually short and sweet so don’t miss out.

MOLD I am excited to see MOLD because as far as I know they are a relatively new outfit including former members of PAN. They are driving and volatile. They have conflict, they have resolution. They have angst, they have anger. They just christened a new venue a couple weeks ago at what looks like it was a stellar show.

This is sure to be a great show. You can’t miss seeing talented bands like this grace the same stage in Kalamazoo.

~Tonight~ Forget the Times, Dental Work, Sid Redlin @ Louie’s

Image

Local noise gods Forget the Times and Sid Redlin take the stage tonight with Traverse City Native DENTAL WORK at the eccentric Louie’s Trophy House Grill tonight at 9.

If you haven’t had the chance to check out any of Kalamazoo’s many noise shows, this would be a good time to start.

Forget the Times brings dystopian love songs from an alternate universe where everything is opposite as it is here.

Sid Redlin is an oscillator freak with a penchant for the absurd. His music is Below is a clip from a live performance with his band BORON NUZZLE at the Black Lodge earlier this year.

I have never seen Dental Work live. What I can say though, by listening to their bandcamp, and the fact that they have played with Boron Nuzzle before and therefore I came in contact with a copy of ANXIETY.ADDICTION.ABUSE. and listened to a good portion of it: is that Dental Work is raw and aggressive. Made with what I can only assume is a manajerie of some wicked electronics, Dental Work’s abrasive and entrancing style will be sure to sate your thirst for unique aural experiences.

7/8 – The Ladybug Transistor, The Philly Crawlers, Deep Waters @ The Strutt

Dear fans of Rock ‘N Roll music,

On the Eighth, (that’s tomorrow) at The Strutt (that’s here) The Ladybug Transistor will be playing what Wikipedia describes as “Indie Pop”, which, somehow, indirectly, is a variation on the age-old tradition of Rock ‘N Roll. Assuming that you are a member of the teeming masses that this letter was addressed to, this should excite you.

But wait! There’s more!

The Ladybug Transistor is/was a member of the Elephant 6 collective (that was just in town on their Holiday Surprise Tour). This means that not only will it be indie pop, it will be well done indie pop. Having gone to the Elephant 6 show, and personally enjoying the Ladybug Transistor, I would strongly suggest going to this show. Still concerned? Don’t be! They sound like this:

But wait! There’s more!

Opening for TLBT (The Ladybug Transistor) will be local staple The Philly Crawlers. TPC (The Philly Crawlers) are also an indie pop band. That’s twice as much indie pop in one night! Not convinced? HERE’S ANOTHER VIDEO:

BUT WAIT! THERE’S EVEN MORE!

Deep Waters is also playing, but they’re too cool for the internet. Jeremy Ruggles, Jakab Selner, and David Spalveri-Kruse make it up, and I don’t knew what it sounds like, but if you know those cats you’d know that it was reason to be excited. And with the bill they’re playing on, well, it’s just all a deal you can’t pass up.
