8/11 – Noise / Rock / Noise Rock / Tape release / Music

Courtesy myspace.com/theesoupcans

Experimental music is hitting the Strutt again, and with force tomorrow night. The Soup Cans are coming down from Canada, and bringing their own brand of noise-infused punk rock with them. Frantic sometimes, downright frightening others, The Soupcans will make you fell something you’ve not felt in a long time – if ever before.

.Also up on the bill, local Kalamazoo noise-rock post-everything band Forget The Times will be out en force. Featuring members of such prominent local groups as Rotten Wood Moon, The Philly Crawlers, Lincoln County War, The Reptilian, and Son Drop, this batch of fellas are out to do something they’ve never done before. One thing they have done, however, is put out a tape, and they’re gonna do it again: This is FTT’s official second tape-release on Already Dead Tapes. This is a collection of older live recordings, in case you’re in to that.

Finally, local long-time noise musician Sid Redlin of Boron Nuzzle will be bringing his strange drone electronica to bear against the minds of the willing. His is a mesmerizing set, and should be a lot of fun.

If your preference tomorrow night is a more straight-forward approach to music, however, you can always pop down to Louie’s Trophy House Grille and check out The Atom Age. These guys are punk-influenced rock from Hollywood California, and one of the hardest working bands I’ve ever met. Loud, high-energy rockin’-out is to expected in full.

Supporting these cats is the local Ska outfit The Mushmen. They just put out a new album last week, and that show was a display of The Mushmen being high-energy as they have ever been. Dancing is not just a suggestion with these guys, it’s the rule.

The music for both shows start at 9pm. The Strutt’s cover is 5 bucks, Louies’ cover is 6 bucks. Both are great deals for excellent shows. See you out and about.

08/02-Spelling Bee(MO), Nightlights(FL), Bike Tuff and The Reptilian at The KFC Castle

House venues come and go in Kalamazoo very often and it is awesome when a new place gets started up. This Tuesday the newest addition to the Kalamazoo house show circuit, The KFC Castle, will be having its first show!

Spelling Bee is a spazzy post-punk duo from St. Louis, MO. They are some friendly people that play very loud and noisy jams in the realm of Lightning Bolt.

And from the other side of the country, Nightlights from Florida will be bringing their catchy pop punk tunes to Kalamazoo.

Bike Tuff and The Reptilian will be tagging along as the local acts. Bring donations for touring bands. If you got beers, you got bucks. Show will start at 8 and be respectful of the crib. Check out the Facebook Event thang!

Saxsquatch and His World Renowned Bridge Band Gettin’ Jazzy @ Louie’s

Are you asking yourself, “Self, what am I going to do with myself Thursday night?” Well, why don’t you head down to Louie’s Trophy House and kick it with the Saxsquatch? The man himself will be wailing the night away with his band and you can come beat the heat (there’s air conditioning) and relax for a reasonable charge ($3) – with reasonable drink specials to boot! And there’s pizza!

So if you like jazz, drinks, and unchecked dexterity, here’s something to check out Thursday night.

7/25 – The Fireplace Club Burns it down with WOLFS, PEGGY WRAY and DYLAN LANCASTER

You like guitar-and-vocals singer-songwriter living-room shows on a warm Monday night, don’t you? Well if so, The House Of Love has a treat for you, with three phenomenal guitar-and-vocals singer-songwriter types bringing their six-strings and singing tunes for ya.

All the way from Columbus, Ohio, Maryn Jones’s new project Wolfs is going to grace us with an acoustic trio that cools you down even in this humid Michigan heat. It’s soft, it’s wonderful, and it’s beautiful in a variety of ways. Be excited!

Providing local support, Peggy Wray will be performing her trademark brand of dark, soulful acoustic music. A strong voice and beautiful compositions make Peggy a gem and treasure of Kalamazoo’s diverse music scene, to be sure.

Finally, the lead guitar player for Kalamazoo / Traverse City joint-custody band Birches, Dylan Lancaster, will also be doing an acoustic set of his music. His is an interesting and classic approach to songwriting that will make your girlfriend cry.

The show starts at 8:30 promptly. There’s no cover, but if you bring some change (or even some cash dollars) to throw in a hat, that would sure help Wolfs get down the road a little further so they can keep playing music!

TONIGHT 7/21 Cloud Mouth, Jowls, Pan, Ackley Kid and The Reptilian

Yup! 5 bands are bringing the noise and the funk (well, in this case, punk) to The Anthill here in Kalamazoo tonight! The Reptilian and Cloudmouth are returning from their chrondevouz tour to celebrate the birthday of Josh Veld. Joining them are former Victor! Fix The Sun members with their more punk-as-fuck project, Jowls, plus jazz-mathers Pan and fuck-as-punk Ackley Kid. Show starts at 8 p.m. If you don’t know where the Anthill is, ask someone who does (like us).

Free show w/ new releases from both Gitis Baggs and Andy Catlin TONIGHT

A dual release show is taking place tonight at The Strutt in good old downtown Kalamazoo, Michigan.  We shall see new material from both Gitis Baggs and Lasso.  And it’s a FREE SHOW!

The genius tact of craft that is Mr. Gitis Baggs is making available his newest CD, The Gitis Baggs Game, featuring 8 tracks that he has composed and performed with various guests.  Packaged along with Game shall be his last CD, The Universe and Dr. Kaiser, which saw limited release last year, though anyone who has had the fortune to hear the album seems to fall in love with the songs and voice.

Multi-Instrument and recording master Andy Catlin of The Go-Rounds, ex-Tiny Rhythm, and many other assorted projects is Lasso, an outsider country project that’s first release is on cassette through Chicago tape label Already Dead. This will be available tonight for $5!

Kalamazoo’s Elk Welcome, formerly Nerves, will provide a scorching set of heavy jams; these guys seem to get progressively heavier with each show.

Noise rockers Forget The Times will be opening the show promptly at 9:30 p.m., performing a two-guitar set, no percussion.  Probably gonna be weird!

The Strutt is located at 773 W. Michigan in downtown Kalamazoo.  Note that it’s FREE!  FREE!

7/13 – Victory House hosts it’s first show

Tomorrow night, the Victory House will be putting on a show for the first time in it’s year of existence. The show, with an eclectic mix from all over the USofA, promises to be nothing shy of radical. Here’s a general idea of how the night will look:

Kicking things off at 9 o’clock will be comedian and longtime friend of the Victory residents, R. Cranberry. Then, things get heavy. Illustrations out of Texas and Wolfmouth from Missouri are out on tour together and bringing the party here to Kalamazoo. Check some tasty jams that they have to offer

Wolfmouth

Joining us from North Carolina are one of the raddest two-piece fuzz-rockers around. Listen to some of their summery-fun, garage-poppin’ tunes here and check ’em out tomorrow. Word is they’ve got some tapes for sale, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Then, the party’s moving upstairs where everyone can chill and we’re going to take it down a notch with some of Kalamazoo’s finest. Totally Rad will having their first performance with an acoustic guitar since their debut show a little over a year ago. The Philly Crawlers’ own Peter Damien Cook will be providing us with some songs of his own. And the guitar and violin playing couple Lincoln County War will be giving us a taste of their own style folk punk

07/11 We Were Skeletons, Caution Children, The Reptilian, Jowls and My Fictions @ The Strutt

Three touring bands from all over the US are coming to the Strutt this Monday night. We Were Skeletons hails from Lancaster,PA and plays some very intense technical screamo jamz. I have been listening to their full length for a bit and every time I give it a listen, it sounds fresh and new. The song structures remind me a lot of Hot Cross but with the technicality of Capsule. They have released a 7″ split with MNWA and The Saddest Landscape and a 12″ with Topshelf Records. Buy it here or give it a listen here.

On tour with We Were Skeletons is Caution Children from Florida. The play a mix of post rock and screamo. It reminds me a lot of Men As Trees, if anyone remembers them from playing at 902 Davis a couple of times, in the way they had very melodic ambient riffs while having a very shaky rough scream over the top. Also on the bill is My Fictions from Massachusetts. These dudes are all about epic post hardcore in the vein of Touche Amore, Pianos Become the Teeth and Caravels.

My favorite boys from Grand Rapids, Jowls, are also coming down to the Strutt on Monday. They are a powerful screamo two piece that will melt your brain. Recently they got signed to Doghouse Records and will be putting out a full length in the fall. My band(The Reptilian) will be putting out a split with them in the fall as well. They just recorded the tracks for it and here is a little teaser:

And finally my dinguz punk band, The Reptilian will be playing as well.

Show starts at 8 PM

$5

7/8 – The Ladybug Transistor, The Philly Crawlers, Deep Waters @ The Strutt

Dear fans of Rock ‘N Roll music,

On the Eighth, (that’s tomorrow) at The Strutt (that’s here) The Ladybug Transistor will be playing what Wikipedia describes as “Indie Pop”, which, somehow, indirectly, is a variation on the age-old tradition of Rock ‘N Roll. Assuming that you are a member of the teeming masses that this letter was addressed to, this should excite you.

But wait! There’s more!

The Ladybug Transistor is/was a member of the Elephant 6 collective (that was just in town on their Holiday Surprise Tour). This means that not only will it be indie pop, it will be well done indie pop. Having gone to the Elephant 6 show, and personally enjoying the Ladybug Transistor, I would strongly suggest going to this show. Still concerned? Don’t be! They sound like this:

But wait! There’s more!

Opening for TLBT (The Ladybug Transistor) will be local staple The Philly Crawlers. TPC (The Philly Crawlers) are also an indie pop band. That’s twice as much indie pop in one night! Not convinced? HERE’S ANOTHER VIDEO:

BUT WAIT! THERE’S EVEN MORE!

Deep Waters is also playing, but they’re too cool for the internet. Jeremy Ruggles, Jakab Selner, and David Spalveri-Kruse make it up, and I don’t knew what it sounds like, but if you know those cats you’d know that it was reason to be excited. And with the bill they’re playing on, well, it’s just all a deal you can’t pass up.
